stretchy wrap question

This is probably a stupid question, but do you have to tie a stretchy wrap (like moby) around your waist/hips?

If you stopped and tied a knot at step 6 of the instructions instead of wrapping it back around the front, would it still work?
Is the waist-wrapping step required to holding baby securely, or is it just for weight distribution and parental comfort?

Thanks!

I know you can tie it either in the back, front, or at the hip. I don't think it really matters if it's wrapped back around.

You just don't want soooo much fabric hanging down that it trips you up, gets caught in doors, etc. I think that's one of the main reasons for wrapping around the waist a time or two.......

Thanks, mamas!

I'll be making my own, so I can just make it shorter so I don't have too much fabric hanging down in the back.
I just wanted to make sure it would work before getting the fabric.
Wraps look so great, but I find it uncomfortable to have things tied around my waist/hips, and wouldn't be able to wear a wrap if that was required.
(I just had a ring sling last time.)

If you put the knot in the back it can be uncomfortable to sit against anything. The deluxe version of the Moby is shorter overall and one end is longer than the other so that it always ties on the hip.
