So staying at my dads for a while we are in limbo. He said I could use a space for a garden. I started getting it ready. Is south facing, was covered with weed matt and wood chips for years prob 20+. Under the weed mat was a major ant colony. So what should I do? Not a pesticide user really, but am I going to have ant probs if I till and plant? Will the ants take ita al? Let me know your experiance. I still have several weeks before last frost here in CO! Thanks

You could pour hot water into the colony. Dig up a portion and add boric acid or borax. Put out bait.Mix boric acid with jelly as a bait.Dig up most of the colony and dump somewhere far away.

I had quite a few ant mounds in my garden area, too. I went ahead and had the area tilled, and then went around the perimeter with Terro ant granuals (it was in a shaker can). I'm hoping that, by putting it around the perimeter, the ants will just take enough back to kill themselves off, without dumping more poison than is needed on the area.

I've heard of dumping a big pot of boiling water on the mound, but I can't stomach that one, as I once spilled a pot of boiling water on my leg, and couldn't do that to something else. I've hear that it works, though, and you wouldn't have to worry about chemicals!
