what finally worked

DD will be 4 this week. she's been sleeping through the night for the past month or so, so i feel "safe" in claiming victory. she coslept with me until her brother was born when she was 3 years 5 months old; then i had to move her into her own toddler bed right next to my bed. i got a lot of middle of the night wake ups, a few times she wet my bed. i guess it was an adjustment, and she was also basically nightweaned at this time, although not explicitly so, but it was hard being a solo night time parent with a newborn, and then also a preschooler wanting to wake up and nurse every few hours.

what finally worked, right around when my son was six months old, and he started sleeping much longer stretches (the kid is a great sleeper, sleeps like a rock, stirs to nurse and goes right back to sleep...) what finally worked is that we have contests to see who can sleep the best overnight.

DD, being ultra competitive (in a good way), always wants to win, and even asks to be put to bed (i do still nurse her to sleep for about 10 minutes along with a bedtime book). and if she does wake at night, i can just say get back to sleep right away so brother doesn't win the contest!

it works!!!

That is such a cute story and a great idea! I love challenging my son - he thinks it is so much fun. At his age, we just do it to see how fast he can get the laundry from the washer to the dryer or how quickly he can put the blocks away. He is "racing" me of course, and it is all laughs! I wish I had a way to make that work at night too!
