Nipple injury, bleeding, OUCH!!

DS was doing his typical nursing jungle gym behavior this morning, and slid off my lap, taking my nipple with him. He got me pretty good. I've put lanolin on it, but it starts bleeding again each time he nurses. He is 16 months old and definitely still nurses a lot, so not nursing him on that side isn't really an option.

Is it okay that he is getting some blood when he nurses?

Totally OK.

But OUCH! I hope you feel better soon! Sometimes nursing in a different position (football or sitting facing you) can help with the healing of nipple trauma... if your DS will stay in one position for a full nursing session!

You are doing everything right! If you use both side to nurse I would start on the other side first.

Ugh. It hurts!!!!

Does the all purpose nipple cream stuff help heal faster than lanolin? I may call our doctor today to see if she can get me some. At least it has stopped bleeding today.

Yes, APNO may help more than lanolin - which can act as a barrier to keep bacteria close to the wound.

Also remember that pain killers such as ibuprofen or acetominophen can help with the pain. They need to be taken 15-30 min before breastfeeding though to help, or on a schedule (every 6 hours or whatever the box says) consistently.
