If you use one, do you take it off each night before bed or do you actually use it to cover up with?

I always use it as part of the blankets, but I remember my Grandmother always putting hers at the foot of the bed.

Just curious

So far everyone agrees with me

I think of a bedspread and a comforter as two different things. In my mind, a bedspread is thin and covers the whole bed, pillows included, and its not a blanket. A comforter is fluffy and it doesn't cover the pillows when the bed is made, and it is a blanket for sleeping. I use a comforter on our bed, but if we are guests someplace where they use a bedspread I fold it down to the foot of the bed like your grandmother.

In my mind a bedspread is purely decorative, while a comforter/duvet is functional. We have a duvet in colder weather and yes we sleep under it. In warmer weather I put the duvet in storage and we use a blanket instead to sleep under. We don't have a decorative layer like a bedspread so there's nothing to put away when we go to sleep.

We have down comforters on our beds (or alternative versions). DD has hers in a duvet and kicks it off before she falls asleep. It is meant to be a blanket, so I answered that way.

We have a warm-ish comforter for "winter" (our cool season) and a down blanket (very lightweight) for the rest of the year. I toss a flat sheet over the top to protect the comforter/blanket from the kitten and child. We sleep under the flat sheet/comforter/flat sheet, but often fold down the blanket and top flat sheet in the heat of summer (no A/C) just sleeping under the flat sheet closest to the mattress. Gosh, that sounds complicated...maybe I am just tired. It is very easy in real life.

In the warm months, I just swap DD's comforter (lightweight, but she runs HOT) for a flannel sheet for her to use as a blanket. She has two very nice comforters (one is real down and one is alternative down) and no one who stays with us regularly, nor DD, like either of them. DD has a twin bed and a trundle (twin), so I have 2-3 of everything for her room to handle guests. Three sets of sheets, two comforters, two matching duvets, three pillows, and a handful of blankets of varying weights. We have regular guests who prefer double size top sheets and blankets. We have guests who prefer no top sheet at all and no comforters, just a fleece blanket...two, if it is cold. And we have DD (age 9), who kicks off everything no matter what it is... except the tiniest of blankets... and always has since infancy. She hates socks, too. Until the last year or so, she would only keep a baby blanket on during the night regardless of temperature. She has moved up to a quilt that is bigger than the average baby blanket of today, but was DH's baby blanket eons ago. Crazy kid!

I am too lazy to do anything besides crawl between the sheets at night, under whatever happens to be on the bed. And I am too cheap to put anything on my bed that isn't functional.

We have a heavy comforter on the bed in the winter (spring and fall too - it is cold here); in the summer, we store the comforter and replace it with a fleece blanket.

I would concur.

That being said, we do not have a bedspread, although would like one, but we just use blankets and comforters. We do not have a bedspread, which to me would be more of a decorative cover for the entire bed.

We use ours as a blanket, but I was just telling DH we should take it off each night b/c it's dry clean only (I don't even think it would fit in our washer, and it has embroidery on it). It's a new bedding set, but our old one was machine washable so I didn't mind it being used (and potentially peed on by the LO).

We just have a cheap store bought quilt so we use it and have to wash it often. If I had a nice hand made quilt I would probably pull it back and have other blankets on the bed so it didn't have to be washed so often.

DBF is very picky about his bed though and has to have his top sheet or he can't sleep all night. He has his sheets and two thin comforters that must be on the bed at all times, and a fan to cool him off because both comforters are too warm for him. I once tried to figure out why he doesn't just take off a comforter and ditch the fan, but it's a lost cause.

We have a quilt bedspread that is just for decoration. Mopst of the time it isn't on the bed at all though b/c I am too lazy to put it on. I would not sleep with it because then I would have to wash it on a regular basis.
If I had a comforter I would sleep with it, but it would have a comforter cover that could be removed and washed regularly so I didn't have to wash the whole thing and wait for it to dry.

Interesting, thanks for the replies!

I have a pretty white bedspread that I am about to put on the bed. I personally view a bedspread and a comforter as one and the same. But I have a ton of pillows so the bedspread would not even fit over them anyhow- but I do see your point, Aprons and Acorns When I worked at a hotel we had bedspreads and we would cover the pillows with them and tuck them underneath. I would do that too if I only had two pillows, but I have 4

This is me. I have the fitted sheet and my patchwork quilt, which I suppose is like a bedspread. If I'm cold, I have an extra quilt that I keep on my chair. I hate top sheets. In the summer, I swap the quilt out for a light cotton blanket, and just have that.

This is us too. We use a down comforter 8 months out of the year. The top sheet gets dragged out in the hottest part of the summer.

I only used a decorative quilt for the bed when our house was being shown. That would come off the bed after a showing and be put away until the next.

Oh how I wish I could have a down comforter!! I am super allergic though, no matter how many times the feathers have been cleaned I tried down alternative but it just isn't the same.

We use duvets over comforters & we use them. I also fold the sheet over the top of the duvet so that the sheet is up against my face since the sheets get washed weeky & the duvet cover more like monthly. If it is hot then we will fold the duvet down to the foot of the bed, but it is used most of the year on all of our beds.

Me too - I can't stand the top sheet. I don't even buy them anymore!

I'm the odd ball...our beds are made up with fitted/flat sheets and a blanket and topped with a quilt. I wash the quilts when they get dirty...about every 3 months or so.
In winter months we sleep under the quilt and in the warmer months the quilt stays on the bed, but gets folded at the foot of the bed before sleep.

especially since I've been trying to make my bed every morning. . .it's so easy just to put the pillows where they go then throw the comforter over everything. can't imagine throwing another thing into the mix.
