not a mom of twins, but i saw this on new posts and just wanted to say that i was watching a story on TV once about conjoined twins who were separated in infancy and put into two cribs so far apart they couldnt see each other. i actually cried thinking of how that must have traumatized them.
i have always wanted twins, and i think i would definitely offer them the option of bedsharing, esp in the first few months. its just intuitive for me, i dont knwo of any studies.

There is definately medical evidence that premmie twins who share an incubator do much better (gain weight, come off feeding tubes faster) than premmie twins who don't. I am not sure where I saw the study but it was in a medical journal. My twins shared a crib until they got too big not too and then used to hold hands through the slats in the middle of the night. (we put them next to each other). I personally am an advocate for twins sleeping together, our twins definately benefited.

My twins shared a crib when they were in our room but then they started rolling around 1 month so we separated them. They never seemed to notice, and in fact slept better. But I still am totally for crib sharing when they are little enough that it is still safe.
I saw a story on TV about these preemie twins in separate isolettes (incuabtors), which is common and the norm, but one wasn't doing so well so as a last ditch effort, they put the 2 together and she greatly recovered and now both are fine!

Mine slept together for the first couple years. In the begginning it was soley for comfort - after all, they just spent nine months on top of each other in utero- then it was just what was practical, meaning, they took up less space if they slept together, either in a crib, hammock, bunk, bed..... I know it doesn't work for evryone though, but if you can convince her to try it , it'lll certainley save her from having to go out and buy/find two bassinettes/cots/cribs/etc.
