Pants and cloth diapers

Thread Starter
My LO will be turning 1 this week and is quickly learning to walk. Up until this point we've always just dressed him in a top, a cloth diaper (with cover) and a pair of BabyLegs. We've always worn him or carried him while in public. But now that he is becoming more independently mobile, I'm kind of feeling like he should be more dressed while out in public. Especially for outside, I want to put shoes on him, but I think they look a little silly with just the BabyLegs and diaper. But pants just don't seem to fit right over his diapers. It seems like all baby clothes are made to be worn over disposables!
What is everyone else doing to dress their cloth-diapered toddlers?

for a boy, i would do sweats or those active type pants. or maybe size up in some loose fitting jeans like the carpenter style, and then just roll them up a little. hanna andersson stuff fits great over cds. i look for it on ebay or try to catch it on sale so it isn't so pricey. gymboree tends to fit a little roomier in the bum as well i think. when i would watch my friends little cd'd boy, she would get overalls for him and size up in those and just cinch the straps up as far as they would go and roll the legs up a little.

We just use reuglar pants and always have...so maybe we are used to the big butt look? You might need to try a size up and then cuff the pants.

Our kids haven't had any issues with pants.. that said we make sure to use our trimmer covers or pockets when out and about and they need to be dressed

I've never had issues with pants to be honest. We don't size up, it looks normal to me. Though I do see other babes and think wow, they have small tushies!

If you're having trouble (and I can't imagine you will) I would stick with stretchy pants like the Carters ones you can buy in 3 packs. Stretch is also good for letting them explore. Though my son wears khaki's most days just because that was handed down to us and it sure as heck isn't slowing him down.

I like overalls best 'cause they tend to be roomier through the hips & seat. Osh Kosh in particular are my favourite (I can usually find them second hand at consignment stores).

I have only CD a little girl... our boy will be here in July but I wanted to say it is a total PITA to put pants on CD booty. Especially if you are going the prefold/cover route like we do. You got great advice from PPs. I always just sized up one or two sizes and hemmed the pant. DD is 2 and this is the first time I have ever put jeans on her, she is potty trained. I could never find any that would fit her right. Also, I noticed that certain pants seamed to cut into her at the waist and just seemed way to uncomfortable (she never complained) but I wouldn't put her in them. When at home we do what you are doing, I would just get a pair or two of bibs and a couple pairs of pants (size up or two and hem) and call it a day.

NAK
Recycled wool sweater pants. Then you can even skip the cover.

Or, many kids pants have the adjustable elastic in the waistband now. When DD was 12 mos, I bought her some pairs of 3t capris at old navy, and put the waist elastic at the smallest setting. They went to her ankles

So, you may end up with a calvin (from calvin and hobbes) look, where "shorts" go to his ankles. But he will be stylin'

My DD is tiny so the cloth holds her pants up!

Her pants are often longies though. We love them!

I mostly use fleece longies (I use these over fitteds most of the time). But otherwise, I find that most "comfy pants" fit fine over cd's. I haven't tried very many jeans, though.
I use pockets with either "trifolded" flats or hemp inserts.

This is what we did a lot. Also, overalls like a PP mentioned are good.
