gentle ways to coax kitty out?

We used to do a tun of rescue work, but in the last year or two we really slowed down, for health and sanity reasons.

Today I got a call from a women who got my name from someone else that knew I did rescue work, and asked me if I could come get some kittens.

She lives like 6 minutes away, so we went over.

very sad state. Her son was arrested for dog fitting, and drugs, there were originally 6 live cats, plus 2 dead cats in a pet porter (very small one).

She took the cats away from her son before he went to jail, but didn't know what to do with them, since they had never been outside that little porter, they were born in it, lived in it.

Well before we got there, one of her grandkids opened the pet porter and most of the cats scattered, by the time we got there, there was only one very small kitten and 2 dead kittens in the porter,

We buried the dead kittens and brought the other kitten inside our home. Gave her food and water, she drank the water. We can't get into see my vet until Thursday, I really want to take her to my vet because I get a deal.

Her eyes are bright, no gunk, her ears look clean, but she wasn't walking around at all, just laying there, not shaking or breathing hard, didn't look stressed at all. She will let you hold her and seems very calm.

I am worried about her though, She weighs barely a pound, is super tiny and I can barely see any teeth in her mouth, the women told me she knows the kittens were born sometime in November. I know she should be a LOT bigger then she is, she is skin and bones right now.

She lays where ever you put her, she looks around a lot, but isn't interested in checking anything out really.

BUT someone rang the doorbell and she ran under my bed, there must be a slit in the black lining under the box spring, I know she is under there somewhere but I think she is inside the mattress.

Any Ideas how I can coax her out of there? I hate to think of her in the mattress, I did leave food and water easily access to her in case she decides to come out.

Do you have another person around to help? I would take the top mattress off (I'm assuming you have a mattress & box spring) & then have one person carefully tip the boxspring up while the other person gets on the floor to see if they can locate the kitten, once you locate her hopefully you can get her out. I would maybe have a knife or scissors ready in case you need to further cut the fabric as she may have crawled away from where she got in.

Poor little kitty. Where are the others now? How come you chose not to keep them all together? I hope she has a full & speedy recovery.

I dont know if this will help in the immediate situation, but here is an article by Karen Pryor about clicker training shelter cats...it includes info on cats that have shut down, which its sounds like this kitty has done.

Another thing that may help is the bach flower remedy Gorse. It is obviously not a magic fix, but may help. It is for shut down....extreme hopelessness, grief, apathy, despair. lost will to live.

Thank you so much for rescuing this baby

We were going to take all the kittens, but the womens grandson? Opened the porter I don't know what happened before we got there but the kittens took off and scattered. When we got there, one the 2 dead kittens and this kitten was still around, I couldn't find the other ones She has my number if she finds them.

One of the reasons this lady was frantic to get rid of the cats was because she couldn't feed them. So on his way to work today dh took a detour to her house with a big bag of cat food, just in case she finds some of them.

I really wanted to stay and hunt those cats down, but the neighborhood was a little intimidating, I know that sounds horrible, but it was North Minneapolis, not sure if you know anything about that, but its not a nice place, and every other house had pit bulls on big chains and they seemed very aggressive, even just seeing people walk by. There were so many pit bull puppies around, I counted 14 on just one side of the street. Not that I am against bully breeds at all. I just could tell a lot of these dogs were very aggressive.

So last night I had my dh cut as much of the fabric back as possible, I couldn't get under the bed, my belly and all. So he tried, kitten is scared to death of dh, so he went and slept on the couch and I stayed up talking to her gently under there (she was in the middle but could come out IF she wanted) I talked to her until 3AM and fell asleep, woke up at 5 am and she was rubbing her body all over me. If I made a sudden move, she was gone, but she kept coming back.

I will just keep extra food and litter in there for a little bit until she is more comfortable and keep the door open so she has the option to come out and join us.

Poor kitty. she is very sweet. Acts like a nut when you pet her, loves to be touched, just very skittish. Hopefully she will get used to everyone.

Poor dh is only allergic to some cats, and it looks like he is totally allergic to her, but he is going to grin and bare it for now, see if he can get used to her, if not he will get on meds.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

It is wonderful what you are doing for her. I had bad dreams about this story last night - why are some people so cruel?

I am sorry you had a bad dream about it not my intent at all.

Kitty is doing very well, The vet is going to take some xrays of her spine though, it looks kinda crooked. hard to tell. She gets around fine, but just looks a little weird.

She is eating, using the cat box in a very odd way. Very affectionate, very sweet.

She is weary of the other cat. So hopefully they can come to an understanding soon.
