Determining Allergies in BF Baby

Thread Starter
We have a 4 1/2 week old. She just latched a week ago, but I had been pumping and giving a bottle until then. She is getting plenty of milk, but since she was born, she has exhibited intestinal distress on occasion and seems to have good and bad days. I think it may be what I'm eating, but is there any way to know for certain?

I've removed dairy, but I eat a lot of other allergens (peanuts, gluten, etc.). Any suggestions from experienced moms?

Is she showing any other signs of allergies? Like rash, reflux, stuffiness, etc?

How long since you removed dairy? HAve you noticed a difference? Could she have swallowed air from bottles or learning to latch properly?

Intestinal distress is common in newborns, since their digestive tracts aren't mature yet. So it's hard to tell whether what your baby is experiencing is normal or a result of allergies. If she doesn't have other symptoms, and what ends up in her diaper is normal, then she's probably just experiencing the normal discomfort of a brand new digestive system. And, as Tattooed Hand points out, she may well be swallowing air, which adds to the problem.

There's a great run-down on breastmilk and food sensitivities on this page:
