this isn't realistic, is it?

i was just talking to my sister who is EPing for her 4 month old, and asking her how pumping was going. she has a really good supply and has been pumping plenty for her son with just a manual (and it only takes her a few minutes to do it!). anyway, i just asked because i know some people start experiencing less productive responses to the pump a few months in, and i didn't want her to think there was something wrong with her if that was the case, and maybe start supplementing with formula if she didn't want to.

she told me that by 6 months she expects that her son will be "mostly on solids, and getting 3 bottles a day." that doesn't sound like a realistic expectation to me at all. granted, she has already started cereal with him (on the advice of her ped... not sure why, didn't want to get into it at the time) and i think she's also given him other foods. he's a big strong boy and quite mature for his age, so maybe he will be ready? i don't know... i just don't know where she's getting this idea from... we're not really into extended breastfeeding in my family, but even so, my mom breastfed us all to a year and didn't really give us much food until we were older.

should i tell her why that's maybe not a good idea (gut immaturity) or just wait and let her see that he's not having any of it? i'm glad her supply is so good... at least that means she won't have screwed herself if she stops pumping so much only to find he's wanting more bm.

I think the number of bottles unrealistic. my friends that FF do more bottles than that at 6 mos. Depending on how babe sleeps, I'd think between 4-6 bottles more typical, but the sizes will vary, as he may get a smaller one with naps and a bigger one at bedtime.

No, it isn't realistic. Nor is it likely to be good for the little one, even if he is ready to begin complementary foods before then. How you raise it with your sister (if you do), however, is a whole other matter...maybe send/give her information on blw or other evidence-based information on introducing complementary foods which you you "have found useful" (if that applies to you). Good luck! It's not easy dealing tactfully and appropriately with friends and family when you feel they're going down the wrong path.

"Mostly solids" is not realistic for a 6 month old, no.

I do not think this is realistic or healthy for a 6 mo. old. All pediatric authorities agree that baby should get the majority of their calories and nutrition from BM or formula for the 1st year. If your sis goes to mostly solids at 6 mo., her LO will be missing-out on valuable nutrients and fats that he needs for growth and brain development. Honestly, if she's tired of EPing, formula may be a better alternative at that age than trying to force solids.
