talk to me about tetanus

DD1, 7 y.o., was almost fully vaccinated until she had a very mild seizure following her 1 year MMR. After that, we stopped giving vaccines entirely. DD2 has never been vaccinated and is 15 months old. We live on a farm with lots of "hazards" around, and just yesterday, I noticed her about to fall onto a piece of wood with rusty nails sticking out when I grabbed her up. The hazards aren't going to go away - some of them we wouldn't even be able to find since they've probably been here long before us. So I'm stuck wondering if I should get her a tetanus vaccine. Ah...but it's never that easy anymore, is it?

First off, she's been to the pediatrician *once* in her life at 6 weeks old. She was born at home, and I cannot find a ped near us that will take no-vax or selective vax patients. Most of the folks around here who don't vaccinate, don't take their kids in at all except for emergencies, which is really sad to me that I have to worry about what the doctor might say about vaccines anytime I think maybe she should be seen, but that's a whole 'nother issue.

Then, there's the fact that you can't get just a tetanus without the other ones thrown in too, am I right? So she'd have to get the full four rounds of Diptheria, Pertussis & Tetanus? She already has significant seasonal allergies and a gluten intolerance. Her stools are poorly formed in general, and I guess I'm worried that adding four rounds of a multi-vaccine would worsen existing problems.

Last one is that I had Tourette's as a child and my husband had a severe case of OCD as a child, both Spectrum Disorders. So vaccinating is always, always a tough choice.

But those rusty nails again....I'm not that informed on tetanus in general. Maybe the media blows it up? Maybe not? I don't know what to do or how worried I should be about it.

What do you all think?

I think you should read up on tetanus, educate yourself about it and learn how to properly treat wounds. If your DD ever got a wound that was truly a concern for tetanus, you could get her the TIG.

Given her problems and your family history, I wouldn't vax, farm or no farm! I would just take precautions and learn about the disease and also about homeopathy. If your DD ever gets a puncture wound, ledum will be very useful.

I agree with marnica that you should read up on how to treat injuries and know that TiG is an option.

BUT, if you are still considering the vaccine...there is a Td which is tetanus and diptheria only (the diptheria toxoid is an integral part of the tetanus component, so I don't think you can get *just* tetanus) but at least it doesn't also include the pertussis portion (which is among the higher reactive and lower efficacy vaccines) And she wouldn't need 4 doses...the 4 doses of the DTaP is for the pertussis component. The tetanus component is considered good for 10 years as long as she's over a year old. (double check that to be sure, but I believe that's true).

As far as handling the ped...you could go in with a bogus injury (a cut or scrape or something) and ask for the Td vaccine (say she had a bad reaction to the pertussis before or something). Make up a story before hand that you just moved to the area and you don't have her records yet from her old dr. Whatever you want to say, because you won't be going back anyway!

Also is there a health dept near by that you could go to to get the vaccine instead of a regular ped? What about family practice?

HI!

Well as you can see from my name, we're a horse family. DS has been running around the barn since before he could run. When I'm not at the barn, I'm in the garden and DS has been playing next to me in the soil since he could sit up usually barefoot with clothing optional. DS is now 3 and is unvaxed.

I was concerned in the beginning but as others have said, I did some research on tetanus and wound care.

Now I just make sure to keep a little first aid kit with me at the barn and at home. Any cuts/scrapes are run under water, encouraged to bleed, treated with peroxide or tea tree oil and that's about it.

Should a deep puncture would ever occur, we will insist upon the TiG shot not the vaccine.

Thanks everyone! It sounds like my instincts were right on this probably not being the best idea for my daughter, and I was letting the hyped-up fear of rusty nails take hold a little. I would like to do more research on the tetanus vaccine and especially on proper wound care, but I don't want to turn to a fear-based resource in either direction. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I think we need a reference book in our home library that has a somewhat balanced view of the different vaccines. Well, actually, it doesn't even have to be all that balanced, since I'm pretty against all these multiple vax in general, just not fear-based.

Would anyone recommend either of these for our home library?

The Vaccine Book by Dr. Sears
How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Doctor by Dr. Mendelsohn

Or any others you'd recommend? I want more of a reference guide broken up by the different vaccines & illnesses, not a why-you-should-question-the-vaccine-status-quo type of thing.

Thanks very much for easing my mind a bit on this and pointing me in some good directions!

fwiw there is a solo tetanus available for kids over 7yrs.

As someone who is reactive to tetanus and has a family history of reactions to it, I would avoid it and learn more about tetanus.

Well, this thread is very helpful. I just stepped on a rusty nail this afternoon. I haven't had any vaxes in 20 years and have previously been anti-vax because of my ds1's reaction as a baby. (I say previously anti vax because while I'd prefer to be anti vax still, we have different laws in our new state and have to abide by those laws because my kids go to public school.)

I washed the hole, which barely had a smear of blood and made me slightly concerned, and swabbed it with some alcohol (not what I wanted, but it was handy) and I will be soaking it in epsom salts and TTO.

This house has been here since 1975, but had been farm land before that. The nail is only about 2 yrs old, however, based on the color of the paint used on the board it was sticking out of. The shoes I was wearing a crocs, and the sole is about an inch or so thick. I steppe don it with my full weight (157 lbs).
