Toddlers Fever

At what point do I call our ped? DS who is 14 months old has been running a fever of high 100's with 104.6 being highest and hovering in 103's.

He has no other symptoms but a redness and very slight swelling of left eyelid but no discharge. He is nursing fine and taking sips of water.

Also hehas been sleeping quite a bit (if this info helps)

I very rarely give Tylenol but I have been when it goes closer to 104 and when I do it comes down to 102 and lower.

I'm at a loss as to what this is and when and if to go to ped.

Any advice or wisdom?

I basically could careless about fevers and go with how is the child acting. I have had kids run 105 degree fever and be totally fine up and playing and kids who ran 100 fever and be lethargic and not moving around. So the question is how is he acting? Is he playing and drinking and eating and having wet diapers?

When his fever is up at 103 plus, he sleeps. When he is down aat 102 and lower he plays.

His diapers are wet just not very.

I have never had a kiddo with a fever this high.

Your reply is very reassuring though, thank you

I'd take supportive measures, for us it's mostly nutritional support, to help his body finish this quicker and easier. Fever in itself isn't a concern to me, I just stopped taking my kids' temps after a while, but I pay attention to their other symptoms and ratchet up or down on supportive stuff depending on how they're doing. Sleep is good. Oddly, even when feverish, a couple times I think a blanket on the sleeping, feverish kiddo helped. I wouldn't keep it on if kiddo didn't like it, but I think it helped their bodies, they didn't have to generate the heat all on their own? Something to consider; I've had a couple illnesses that were similar.

Just wanted to add that it's good to also look for clues as to what is causing the fever, b/c that could help determine your next steps.

Is he tugging at his ears, complaining of ear pain?
Does he have pain when peeing, foul smelling urine or other uti symptoms?

I have worried less about the fever in my DS, more about what the cause is to help me determine if a trip to the HCP is necessary.

Hope he's feeling better soon.

I agree with the PPs. The fever is one thing, but the other symptoms are another. Obviously, you want to make sure he´s getting enough fluids, but also try to be aware if he seems to be having exagerrated discomfort anywhere (ears, stomach, etc.) other than the usual "don´t feel great because of being sick."

I know every child is different, but with my DS, he can be sick and feverish, but when his general behavior and mood really starts going downhill, normally it means something else is up.

This has absolutely been my experience with my 2 kids as well.
