Need to know what to expect with OB

The last time I dealt with an OB was over 8 years ago with my first and it forever soured me on most OBs; however, I find myself having to do one this time. I went with a midwife with my second, but insurance won't cover and we need no more debt .

So, I'm going for a VBAC and this doc is notoriously awesome for that purpose, so no worries there. I'm also 37 and of "advanced" age you know? So, what should I expect by way of high risk garbage and what not? I'm healthy with no medical issues.

I plan to refuse every test they have like GTT, amino, afp, pap, etc (except u/s) and am also curious how that's going to go over LOL. What are my rights exactly? I really like the midwife way and this is culture shock LOL.

Thanks!

Maybe try to be non-confrontational and just say you "decline" those options.

I know I will also hit the "advanced maternal age" category when we get pg. Rumor has it that I'll be "offered" a blood screen at the peri's office and an u/s at 12 weeks to check on the baby. If those are abnormal they suggest strongly a CVS. They try to push it as being able to prepare yourself for a child who has problems rather than being surprised at the time of delivery. I see it as a $600 charge straight into their pocket books.

Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn is a GREAT book that goes over all the "routine" tests at any age of a mother. It's good to know what you would need and what you feel comfortable not getting. It's all up to you. It's your right to "decline" any test or procedure regardless of your caregiver. If they are hesitant on it, just tell them you will sign whatever form to release them from liability. Supposedly, in our state all are mandated to get HIV tested 3 times in pregnancy, we aren't getting any of them. We just signed a form.
