a newbie- getting a little overwhelmed (long)

Hi All!

I've been lurking for three weeks or so, since I noticed a streak of blood in my (then 5 week old) EBF DS2's green mucousy poo. Things are getting more and more complicated, though, and I'm starting to feel a little crazy around the edges.
So here's the story:
First noticed blood around 10 pm Tues March 23. Called the pedi the next day, she saw me that morning. We talked about oversupply, and food intolerance/allergy. She said take Thursday and Friday to block feed and rule out oversupply, if there was no improvement, cut out dairy and soy starting Saturday morning.

I corrected the oversupply issue, but the stools didn't improve, so I cut out milk and soy (3/26 Four days later, Passover started, so I also cut out all grains (except a little (wheat) matzah), rice, corn, and legumes. Stools seemed to improve.

To break the Passover bread fast, I ate a bean and rice burrito (4/6) The next day, another streak of blood. So- maybe not just soy? maybe all legumes? I thought. So now off legumes, too. Called the pedi again, she said yeah, take out legumes, but probably the gut is just still healing- keep up the good work.

Five days later, ANOTHER bloody diaper, the biggest streak yet. Called pedi (4:30pm) got appt the next day(4/14). Talked it out again, we both still feel food sensitivity is the most likely cause, identified higher likelihood of gluten/wheat due to seeming improvement over Passover. But to be efficient, I decided to do an elimation diet- not total, but the "big 8" plus corn, tomatoes, berries, coconut, and citrus. Also started culturelle. Got referral to pedi GI.

So now- been on elim for 4 days (I know it's not that long) and today- stools the worst ever (brown-yellow, FROTHY mucous, one with several streaks of blood.) I have another call in to the pedi, awaiting a response.

Before you can ask, my baby (now 9 weeks) is otherwise an angel- he nurses well, sleeps well (maybe too well- is there such a thing? 6-7 hours at night? 2 hour naps?) no diaper rash. no excema, no baby acne. His only other symptoms are occasional painless-seeming spit ups, mild-moderate nasal congestion, beginnings of cradle cap. Sometimes he looks like he might be having momentary reflux pain- but he doesn't cry out. And he seems to want to rub his face/nose alot... but maybe he's just looking for his fist to suck (he seems to self-sooth already).

I am... doing ok, but I feel like I'm hanging by a thread. I am (was) definately an emotional/comfort eater. Craved dessert after every meal (yeast issues?). Not vegetarian, but maybe only ate meat 2 or 3 times a week, and not usually cooked by me (take out, or in-laws). I'm at a healthy weight (I'm carrying about 20 baby pounds), usually eat a varied diet, and have no major or minor health problems. I did have two c-sections, both emotionally dissapointing but not devastating. I'm a pediatric nurse, so I have tons of western medical knowledge and a good relationship with our pedi and the GI we're seeing, and I was also in school for holistic NP, so I have some knowledge of alternative health systems, but nothing specific or... comprehensive enough to get me through this adjustment.

If you're still reading, thanks! Any support or advice you could send would be appreciated. (I've been lurking and searching, but sometimes, you just need someone to recognize you, you know?

My two main questions are:
1. Should I do a TED?
2. What if GI wants to do a scope?

TIA,
Lisa

I am not a huge fan of TOTAL elimination diets. They can be very difficult to follow and can either lead to nutritional gaps or further existing deficiencies.

The top four most common seem to be dairy, gluten, soy and corn. Could you start with those?

After eliminating all that you said, did you begin eating more of any particular food for calories? Could that be the cause of worsening BM's?

Hugs, mama, it is a tough place to be.

Oh, on the scope--I'm really not in favor of invasive -type tests unless everything else has been ruled out. But that's me...

I think you're taking the right approach, eliminating foods a few at a time. I think dannic asked the right question - what are you eating more of now that you knocked out the top 8 + other stuff you took out? Likely you've increased something your babe is very sensitive to.

If you post what you ate for the last day or two, that might help us troubleshoot for you as well (include any supps you're taking).

I'd say way too early to scope - you've been able to alter your babe's reactions by the food you eat, you just need some time to do the necessary detective work and figure out what foods are causing the reaction.

With the Culturelle, didn't some people on here have problems with Inulin - or am I remembering wrong? The worst days ever sound like they were after removing the top 8 AND starting the culturelle, so I would suspect either the Culturelle or something that you're eating more of (most likely suspect: rice).

Did you look up all the different words for everything so that you're sure you're taking everything out of each thing (dairy, gluten, soy, corn, or whatever). Corn can hide under MANY different names (maltodextrin, dextrose, citric acid, etc.).

I agree that a TED is too hard, and doesn't work that often. Taking things out one a time, from where you are, makes more sense. Are you keeping a food journal, writing everything down that you're eating? including meds and supplements? It is essential when eliminating foods. Since it's coming once every 4-5 days, it may be something that you're not eating that often. If it's happening every day, something more frequent is suspect.

C-sections can set them up for food intolerances (If you do a search on C-Section Syndrome within this forum, there's a super long thread about it).

Thanks for all the responses and support-
I did start a TED, minus rice, Tuesday night. I'm impatient and frustrated with chasing hunch after hunch, knowing that stools can be slow to improve, even after the offender has been removed. Having said that, though, I think I might be seeing improvement already- stools not frothy, less mucousy, yellower, less stinky!
I think I'll keep this diet going for a few more days, and if there really is improvement, then add some other veggies, and maybe lamb, and go on from there.
I am keeping a journal of food and poops, and supplements, but so far I don't have enough data to see clear patterns.
And I'm taking Sundown Naturals Cal/mag/zinc, and Bluebonnet Vit D. Both state no top 8, and no corn yeast gluten barley rice sodium and sugar. Oh, and a progesterone-only BCP.
Thanks again, I'm off to the GI doc now,
Will update!

Supps that say they are free of those things only mean they have below legal detection limits of protein in them. There are plenty of babes on this forum that react to the soy derived E and vitamin C derived from corn in almost all supps. Your cal/mag/zinc supp, for example, has "vegetable cellulose" - most likely corn (and it doesn't say corn free). Some babes handle that amount of corn, some wouldn't. Just something to tuck in the back of your mind if the TED doesn't get you to baseline.

Back from the GI- a suprisingly good visit!
She said keep up the good work the the elim diet, she referred me to her nutritionist, and said see you in 4-6 weeks. She didn't even mention Neocate, and said she would't do a scope in this situation.
She did send stool speciments, but doesn't expect the results to give us any more information. The stool he made in the exam room was negative for blood, too!
Very encouraging, all around.
Thanks again for all your support,
Lisa

Another thought: if the bad poo began after you started the probiotics--could it have been die off from yeast? In which case it would have gotten better in a few days??? Just a thought that popped into my head...
