Can you help a sewing challenged mama? Please?

I've been trying to teach myself to sew and I'm making (well, attempting to make) some recycled sweater longies. I was doing ok but when I "knicked" the arms to create the pant portion, I apparently did it wrong and I ended up with a big gap in the crotch area:

Well, I was going to just sew it up but that would make the pant really small and I figured I'd just sew in a little piece of the sweater to fill in the area, (plus it'd give my LO more moving room). Well I ended up with this:

and I just don't know what to do. I can't for the life of me, figure out how to go about attaching the extra piece. I don't even know if it's the right shape...I do have more of the sweater left (some with the stripes even but that scared me) so if I need a different shape or size piece I can do that. I just need help figuring this out. Pictures would be most helpful
TIA

The diamond shape looks right to me but it does seem very large compare to the hole. I would go with a much smaller piece.

As to sewing it I would probably hand sew that small seam. I find bits like that so tricky on a machine that hand sewing is quicker.

i'd be tempted to cut the thighs and do a different top for the pants..
i found this link in an old mdc thread, the patterns there may help you if you're using a different one.. http://katrinassqs.blogspot.com/2008...s-pattern.html
