I've been trying to teach myself to sew
and I'm making (well, attempting to make) some recycled sweater longies. I was doing ok but when I "knicked" the arms to create the pant portion, I apparently did it wrong and I ended up with a big gap in the crotch area:

Well, I was going to just sew it up but that would make the pant really small and I figured I'd just sew in a little piece of the sweater to fill in the area, (plus it'd give my LO more moving room). Well I ended up with this:

and I just don't know what to do. I can't for the life of me, figure out how to go about attaching the extra piece. I don't even know if it's the right shape...I do have more of the sweater left (some with the stripes even but that scared me) so if I need a different shape or size piece I can do that. I just need help figuring this out. Pictures would be most helpful
TIA
