fever, rash, screaming 6 m/o? colic?

nak, so apologies...

ds2 had a fever for 5 days, then woke up yesterday with a gazillion little spots, but no more fever. makes me think of roseola - ds1 had it at about the same age. however ds2 has been screaming all.night.long since the onset of this thing. he sleeps well usually as long as i'm next to him, but now he won't nurse to sleep and will only doze in my arms. i went to see his dr this am who said it was a clear case of colic and that it usually starts around 5 m/o? he didn't seem interested in the least in the spots or the fever; just said they could be viral but unlikely to be the cause of the sleep disruption. no ear infection, no sore throat, 2 teeth out but no gum swelling... could this really be the onset of colic? uggghhhhhh...... thx

Your doc said colic starts at 5 months? I've always read that it typically ENDS around 3 months. And isn't accompanied by fever and spots! I would get a 2nd opinion, personally.

not colic, read this, it usually begins by three weeks!

I'm sorry your lo is sick. if your gut is telling something is up, get a second opinion.

Ummm, not colic.

It could be that the rash is on his tonsils too. Have you tried Tylenol? I have had kids with really really nasty sore throats with a rash that couldn't even nurse for a couple days, but it passed and they went back to nursing. Sorry.

I would also get a second opinion.

Rubella? I really think that Rubella is around more than drs think it is. The hallmark is that the rash begins after the fever subsides, and the rash starts at the head/face vs the trunk (where most viral rashes start).

Either way...sounds like your little guy is sick, but not horribly so. I'd say give it another couple days to see if his fitful sleeping gets any better.

Colic? Wow, your doc is way off! Colic starts much earlier than that!

My guess would be roseola, rubella or a viral rash. Either way, get a different doc!

I've not heard of such a late onset of colic either. It's probably wise to search for another diagnosis.
My thoughts are with you and your baby.

Thanks mama! Babe slept rather well last night (down at 8 and up for good at 5 am, taking a nap on me now...) - he only woke up to nurse 3-4 times, which is a good night for us!!!! The rash has evolved from tiny "pimples" to rosy patches. Looks very much like roseola to me, which I know is harmless, but I don't get why he seems in so much discomfort still 4 days after the fever broke. When DS1 had roseola, he was fussy for a few days with teh fever, then that was it. We're on day 10 now, but I guess we're on the mend though...

But yeah... colic...???? To be honest, I'm not even sure what I was expecting from the dr. other than some reassurance that this was indeed just a viral rash and it would run its course, but this is ridiculous. The worst is that he was very patronizing and I felt like he was lecturing me on nighttime parenting (he said, "well, colicky babies cry a lot at night and they just need to be held..." duh!!! - at least he didn't tell me to let him cry). Rant over. Thanks!!

my nephew had the same thing a few months back and it was roseola. that doctor is nuts. colic STARTING at 6 months!?

sounds like coxsackie to me! (also known as fifth's disease and "hand foot and mouth disease".) it's justa virus that rusn it's course. nothing dangerous... but it can make for a seriously cranky baby for a while!
