How exactly do you sidecar a crib?

I don't know if I should be posting, as I'm not doing "real" cosleeping, but the arms reach co-sleeper is working well for us as it keeps us all close but gives each of us a little more sleeping space, and I'm trying to think ahead so that we can do something similar when DD outgrows it.

I keep seeing people mention "sidecarring a crib" and I'm wondering how its done. Do folks take the side off of the crib and put it next to the parents bed? How do you prevent the crib from separating too far from the bed (and creating a dangerous gap)?

This link should help you. It is the resource we used when side carring our crib.

Also, while you might not be bedsharing, you most definitely are cosleeping! Our DD2 is 13mos and we love having the flexibility of having her in bed with us or in the sidecar.

Good luck!

That link is a great guide. Our crib was not able to be sidecarred in that fashion so what we did was put the crib again the wall and the bed against the crib so that they could not separate. Then we used a couple of rolled up blankets between the crib mattress and the far crib wall to fill in the space.

Yep, you're cosleeping! Same bed, same room, mattresses up against each other, sidecar, etc...all "sleep sharing" practices where the LO is basically close to mama.

We have the Gulliver crib from Ikea, mattress on the lowest level. (We have a regular crib mattress, not the thinner Ikea one.) Our memory foam mattress and slim box spring are on the floor. We took the fourth (long) side off the crib and pushed it up against our mattress. It just stays. We didn't bungee it to our mattress or anything. Maybe it's because we have carpet that it doesn't move. With the mattress on the higher setting, we filled the gap (by the back/long side of the crib) with tightly rolled towels. With the mattress on the lower setting, we had to attach the "daybed bar" (the piece that makes the Gulliver a three-sided toddler bed, basically) and this piece created a gap in between OUR mattress and the crib mattress, since they couldn't be butted up against each other. So now the gap is between the two mattresses (rather than between the crib mattress and the long/back wall of the crib.) We just used the same tightly rolled towels and it worked fine.

Good luck with your sidecar. It's a nice bed extender for when you outgrow the Arm's Reach.
