Moving to Pets
lord, i remember the trauma of having a furry family member die. it is so painful. i am glad you friend got 12 years with their family member. and you are lucky enough to have known her at all. good for you for covering her with a sheet. is your friend back yet to bury her? maybe you all could have a ceremony. i know how much it teaches kids about the spiral of life to participate in funerary rites for pets. it might also provide closure for you friend, she has suffered a devistating loss.

That is loony tunes. I remember when my dog died in the early 90's. They came in the back yard and got her and took her away.

Poor doggie.

I wish I was a neighbor, I would have taken care of it, and I have a very week stomach, I can't clean out my fridge without throwing up, but I value every living thing on this planet, I can't understand how any dog could be left outside to die alone, especially being someones pet.

If I were you I would call someone to investigate this, whats going to happen if the puppy gets sick? Is room mate going to leave that dog outside to rot in the sun too? It is up to EVERYONE to make sure animals are treated with respect and dignity.

If you saw someone abusing an animal in the street you would do something I hope. Its the same thing.

Update: the dog has been packaged for pick up. The police came and moved her to the curb. A message has been left for animal control. I hope a/c comes tonight or early tomorrow. Kids walk by here on the way to school, not to mention its HOT here.

Today was stressful all around. Im glad I had a pre-scheduled therapy appt this evening.

The puppy (all 75 lbs of her) still wont leave the patio. poor thing

I would never refer to a lost loved one (human) as a "yucky dead thing"). That yucky dead thing likely felt lonely and afraid in her final moments. Even if she passed in her sleep, if she was abandoned to the yard because the trouble of owning a dog was too much for your roommate, the dog likely suffered a great deal.

And if she is leaving a Berner outside in 90 degree weather, another call to animal control is probably warranted. That dog needs access to FRESH water, shade, and if at all possible, a small wading pool. Animal control should be aware of the situation so THEY can be the ones to remind your "friend" what is needed to care for her last remaining dog.

Just something to think about...

People suck.

In defense of the OP, I love animals, I'm an animal rescuer, and I also believe that once a pet has died, that "spark" that made the pet your friend is gone. What's left is an empty shell and, yes, if it's been sitting outside and has started to attract flies, that shell is an "icky dead thing." If you feel the need to honour your pet's memory by burying him or her, having him or her cremated, it's for your own comfort, not for your pet's. Your pet has moved on and crossed the rainbow bridge.

I feel the same way about my own body. If my family wants to plan some elaborate funeral for me when I'm gone, that's for them to decide. As for me, I'll be gone, an "icky dead thing."

That said, the right thing was done in calling animal control from a disease perspective...

Do you guys have heat advisories for pets where you are.. for this time of year?!
They tell us not to allow pets out in temps over 101 in the summer; without adequate shade and fresh water.
Maybe there's how the other pup died...heat stroke? How is your roomie taking all of this?

Pets can also suffer from excessive heat. Make sure your pets have adequate drinking water and a shady place to rest.

Poor dog, I hope you can stomach it enough to at least go out there and cover her up until you can get more help.
YEP! and the dog was sick!

poor puppy! that is really sad!

just a check in that this thread is from back in April. it is still very sad, just mentioning that to folks that may think this is actively going on.

I was searching "mountain dog" on here (I'm planning to get one!) and I found this thread; I didn't check dates. OP has mentioned the dog is now gone..and things have been taken care of. It's still shame though.
