Would you ask the teacher this?

Dd attends a one-way language immersion school, 2nd grade. She was given an assignment to research and do a presentation on an endangered species. They were given the assignment last Thursday to present this Thursday. (Obviously everything is in the target language, not English.) Dd was out of school sick on Thursday, but asked the teacher several times on Friday to assign her an animal and give her the instructions for the project. She said that at one point he told her to quit bugging him about it.

Well, he never assigned an animal to her on Friday, so we didn't have the weekend to work on it. He did finally give her the assignment yesterday. It's a fairly intense project and while we've found a lot of info in English, she is still having to use her dictionary a lot to figure out what to write for the report.

She is not going to do as well as she would like to on this project, having only 3 days to work on this. She's frustrated that it will be sloppy. She's a very good student in an academically challenging school, so she takes a lot of pride in her work. Plus, she just found out today that they have to have a poster of the information, as well.

Would you email the teacher and ask that she get an extension for this project? Everyone else will have a whole week to do the project, including a weekend. Dd will get 3 days, plus tonight she has horseback riding lessons and will be gone 2 hours (literally her only weekday activity). I was thinking that since she got it on Monday, she could have until Monday to get it done.

Yes absolutely. I would politely request that dd get the same number of days to complete the assignment as the others in her class.

I'm surprised the teacher didn't offer it already.

Yes, I would.

yes. I would be very nice about, but I would expect the child to be given a full week.

I would ask that your kid be given the same amount of time to prepare as the other children in the class.

Yes, especially since she was responsible enough to ask about it several times on Friday. I would have been tempted to pick my own.

Of course. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

As a separate issue though, I would work with your DD about making sure she is asking her teachers for things at times that are good. When they are not engaged in something else, they have access to any necessary papers and such.
