What healthy foods do you eat to curb a sweet tooth?

It seems like right before my period I crave sweets. I am generally a bread and cheese loving kind of girl

What foods do you keep around to satisfy a sweets craving? Fruit is not hitting the spot today.

I don't have a sweet tooth (I'm one of those weird women that doesn't actually care much for chocolate, even), but my dh has a MAJOR sweet tooth.

He eats fruit when he wants something sweet and it seems to stop the crave. In fact, over the past 2 years, he's lost 70lbs. and most of that was from not snacking on sugary treats anymore and replacing them with fruit. He said it was just a matter of getting into the habit of killing the cravings with fruit. (I know, you said fruit isn't working... just saying that if you keep it up, it will become a habit, that's all.)

For me, when I have the rare craving, I like a glass of sweet tea.

We've made the decision to go sugar and white flour free in our home. I also crave sweets (chocolate) the week before and during my moon. Right now I'm trying to satisfy that craving with honey sweetened hot tea and fruits (mango, tangelos, strawberries). I've heard that increasing protein can help with the sugar cravings, but I don't know yet if this works.

Cream. It sounds weird, I know-- but raw Jersey cream is SWEET all by itself with no sweetener added, plus it's filling and satisfying so you feel sated afterwards. I would add some cream (get good organic cream with no crap added to it) to the fruit, and see if that helps. Full-fat milk can have the same lovely effect.

Muffins made with a TON of butter or coconut oil and some fruit like blueberries are my favorite sweet treat. I cut the sugar in the recipe a lot, because the oil and the fruit make it taste so yummy.

What about fruit spreads, too? Raw honey or real maple syrup are lovely too if you really gotta get the sweet stuff. Dried fruit can taste a lot like candy, too, and might do the trick.

I AM SO WITH YOU! Last week I couldn't stop eating junk andIm paying for it. SO this week when Im actually having a visit from miss moon I've decided not to cave. Its been hard!

Im eating grapes. Not horribly sweet but working somewhat. I also find almonds help. You can get healthy fruit ice pops that are naturally sweet, they seem to help as well. Then if after all the other snacking lol. I'll have a piece of really dark chocolate that helps alot. A friend of mine dips dried fruit in dark chocolate. You get a bit of the chocolate you want and the sweet from the fruit. You could also do this with nuts mmmm

Frozen white grapes!

I also do a vegan banana "icecream". You just throw some frozen banana chunks in a food processor with a little cinnamon and vanilla. Comes out creamy and delicious. Great with a touch of maple syrup and toasted nuts too.

Dates!!!! I love them alone or mixed with other fruits (think LARA bar) Works every time.

I go in the opposite direction, instead of trying to eat healthy sweets. I make sure I'm getting a lot of protein, and a lot of healthy fats (EVOO, coconut oil, pastured butter). My night-time snack to beat off the sweet tooth is popcorn with butter, salt, garlic powder and spices (like chili powder, cumin, paprika...).

I'm with Stacey - a sweets craving is best dealt with by fat and/or protein.

I eat the healthy non-sweet filling stuff (protein, fat, veggies) and then immediately brush my teeth.

I figure that once a week an ounce of lovely, high-quality dark chocolate counts as a medicinal dose.

I just made date squares. The filling was dates + 5 prunes and 1tsp vanilla and 1 T honey.

Ever since I went totally sugar free for a couple of months a few years ago (an Anti Candida diet) I no longer crave sweets as much.

For me a banana with almond butter is like fudge Sunday now. Dates are good but they affect my body like sugar if I have too many so I only eat them with nuts, usually almonds or walnuts.
Or also figs or raisins and walnuts or almonds.

I was told by my naturopathic doctor that if you eat dried fruit with nuts, the protein and oils in the nuts lower the glycemic index of the dried fruit. It works for me in any case.

Thank you all for the tips! And velochic, that is awesome about your DH's weight loss!

I have never really been much of a sweets person. I can usually take it or leave it. But the past few days I have wanted candy so bad! I will keep on with the fruit and try some of the other suggestions. I think if I just went cold turkey on sugar it would be better for me overall.
