Pregnancy After Fibroid Removal Surgery

Thread Starter
A couple years ago I had a laparoscopic myomectomy to remove several fibroids, including a submucosal fibroid that was removed anteriorally. My doc. just saw the notes from that surgery and informed me that they will probably want to perform a c-section at 38 weeks because of weakened uterus issues that come from the surgeon cutting the large fibroid out from the outside of the uterus. To put it lightly, I was pretty bummed.

Has anyone else been pregnant after this surgery? What was your experience.

I had the surgery in December of 08 and my doctor informed me that I would be scheduled for a section at 37 weeks. I kind of knew that it would happen so I just prepared myself

NO! Get a second opinion from a qualified surgeon at the very least.

About ten years ago now I had a lapy & myomectomy from a very large fibroid. My scar is hip to hip. I got pregnant three weeks later. They tried to force a c-section on me but I managed to get my specialist surgeon to write a letter saying not only was it completely unnecessary as there is NO medical indication for one but that it was basically malpractice to do so. I forget exactly what kind of fibroid it was but they did not cut entirely through my uterus. It was also from the outside like yours.

I had my first daughter on her due date naturally with no problems. They tried to use her big size as a reason for an induction with #2 which is contraindicated following a c-section or myomectomy (I found out later) to disastrous effects-their dating was wrong and he was premature. My third and fourth children were also born naturally no problems. It can be done and is done all the time. Your docs need to jump off the c-section bandwagon and do some research. Especially since it has been a few years for you since the surgery (mine was only 3 weeks) there is no indication for a c-section.

Could you talk to your surgeon and express your concerns and desires for a natural birth? I would contact a local ICAN for support and research to bring to your doc if you need it.
