Side pain warrant a dr visit?

For the last couple of months, I've had a dull pain in my right side, a couple of inches above the hip bone. It comes and goes and hasn't concerned me too much, before now. A few days ago it started back up again. Exactly on my side, maybe a bit to the front. But, within the last day or so, it started moving towards my back. At first, it was a dull pain, until I needed to pee, then it hurt worse until I emptied my bladder. But now, it has started to hurt more with movement, as well as just being stationary, but not so much when I have to pee anymore. Today it also started to hurt when I cough. It's not super tender with touch, though.

On Sunday, I went on a bike ride. It was soon after my bike ride that I noticed my side was starting to hurt. I went on another bike ride on Monday, and of course, it was hurting even more after that. I do pull a kid trailer, and on Sunday, had two kids equaling about 80-90 lbs, including the trailer. On Monday I only had one kid plus weight of the trailer, so probably pulling about 50 lbs? Not sure if the biking has anything to do with it, if it's coincidental or causal.

One more thing. This may or may not be related, but I have been really gassy and constipated, too. So much so, that I took a laxative for the first time in my life. It was a store brand, but is "compared" to a Dulculax. (Which I think may have caused my anxiety attacks last night, since it was the only thing I consumed that was different from normal). I've had gas pains before, but this feels different, so I don't think it's gas pains.

I just tried to call my doctor's office, but they are already closed for the evening. Should I just wait and see how I feel in the morning, or should I call and have them page the doctor? I don't think I need to go to the ER yet, so I'd like to wait until tomorrow, if possible.

Sorry for the ramble, I am just hoping that it's nothing serious.

You could have a UTI that is migrating to the kidney. I've managed to have UTIs that didn't give me that 'gotta go right now' feeling.

It could be muscle. Especially if you are carrying a child a lot and throwing your hips and spine out of whack on a regular basis.

It could be your gut.

It could be the appendix--you said right side, right? Although it sounds too low.

It is probably nothing, but it is worth getting checked. Probably not an emergency unless you start to feel worse, at least imo.

Check your temp btw and be sure you aren't running a fever.

Hope you feel better.

My first UTI and subsequent kidney infection was right side pain, after a 15-mile bike ride. They have UTI test strips at most major drugstores - one brand is AZO, if you want to go that route. Other things PP said are possible too.

Another possibility is ovarian cyst, or even gallbladder. I would probably see your HCP.

Do you have a nurses hotline you could call for advice? It sounds like kidney pain to me.

Thanks for all of the responses. It never felt like an emergency, so I waited until today to call my doctor's office. I keep thinking it's exactly where my kidney should be, so it's very possible it's something to do with that. I don't have a fever, so that is a good sign. I've never had a UTI, so I have no idea what that would feel like.

It's weird, because the pain seems to wax and wane...so, atm it doesn't hurt really bad, but by yesterday afternoon, it was hurting pretty good. I'll post again after my appointment.

I had my appointment and my Dr said she thinks it could be kidney, gallbladder, pregnancy or muscular. Nice way to narrow it down. She said that the pain sounded like gallstones, but the location of the pain is where my kidneys are. Urine sample came up clean, though, so she wants another sample in a day. Pregnancy test is neg, but too soon to get a bfp. If the pain doesn't clear up by Monday, she wants me to get more blood work done (had some done a month ago for my physical) and/or an ultrasound on the area.
She gave me a prescription for hyoscyamine, which is an anti-spasmatic. I took one, but it shows lots of side effects, so I'm hoping I don't have to take them for long. But, I am hoping they work, because it's hurting more today than before.

It'll be okay.

From my experience, gall bladder pain can mysteriously come and go so don't be too impressed with that organ; it isn't always serious.

It's far more likely to be muscle pain. At least statistically.

But it's good to rule everything out because we're not statistics.

Thanks, V! I'm hoping it's just muscle pain. I did have a friend who had to have emergency gallbladder surgery a few years ago. Her dad's friend had died from the same thing, less than a month before. Ever since then, it's something that I worry about.

I need forums like this (and people like you) to keep me in check.

Ahhh, but you will go to the ER post haste if things get worse, right? You are doing what you are supposed to; catching things early.

When you get overwhelmed, try telling yourself that and see if it helps.

I find it does.
