It looks as though we are going to be moving this summer, when DS is 3 1/2. He's sort of into Winnie the Pooh and I think he might like a Winnie the Pooh-themed room for the new place, but will he then outgrow it and get embarrassed about it two seconds later? We probably will be in that apartment for three years or so.

Yeah, I wouldn't invest much money in that. I would be surprised if he still wanted Pooh after age 4. But you could buy a solid quilt in red, get a couple Pooh throw pillows (like this:

And some wall clings, and you'd have a completely removable theme for well under $100.

Borrowed Time
While I think that a child could continue to like Winnie the Pooh until the age of 6.5, I've also known plenty of boys who went from Winnie the Pooh to Spiderman at the age of 4.Honestly, if I was going to do a child's room with some type of licensed character theme it would be in a very minimal and easily reversed way. I wouldn't do anything more than wall decals and posters that can be swapped out for something else, a couple throw cushions, and maybe a lamp. The bedding, furniture, rug, curtains, etc would be classic items that would last.

My DS turned 4 in December, and has recently decided he doesn't like any kind of picture on his clothes, band-aids, the shampoo bottle, whatever - too babyish. When I bought him new boxer briefs, he wanted the plain black and gray ones. (But he did get excited about Scooby-Doo bandaids when he saw those a couple weeks ago, so much so that after we bought them he could hardly wait to use them.) He would definitely not want a Pooh room, but I bet he'd go for a Scooby-Doo room.

I think Scooby-Doo is still too scary for DS (he had trouble sleeping after we saw Princess and the Frog on TV in broad daylight, fast-forwarding through all the "scary" parts).
