Dyeing wool roving

I just dyed some natural wool roving. I came out great! We used leftover Easter egg dyes with some vinegar and boiling water.

Question though. I love our soft colours, but no matter how much red we used (we added food colouring to the red), and no matter how long we left it in the dye, we didn't get a deep red colour.

How do you get really deep colours like dark blue, bright red (think elf hats!), and woodsy green?

mordants like cream of tartar and alum can help if you use certain natural dyes. Or you can buy acid dyes http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/en...lnav=dyes.html
