question about progesterone, taking it to lengthen luteal phase while nursing

Hi, i was researching posts on progesterone/prometrium here and came across this. (see quote below)
I wanted clarification if possible. I have been taking 200mg of prometrium this cycle to lengthen my luteal phase shortened by nursing. Last time i did this i conceived on the first try but this time got a bfn. I any case, i have been led to believe that prometrium is fine because it helps to sustain implantation where nursing might interfere with that.

MaerynPearl, if you are out there, i would love it if you could speak to this...
or anyone else who has experience here.

In any case, this time, i also got af, although i had taken the 200mg that afternoon....

ps i hope its ok to quote from another thread....

I know my first... nothing could have been done about it. It wasnt low progesterone or anything just likely the baby would not have survived full term even if the pregnancy had continued.

I do also believe, as you do, that the reason it has the warning not to take when pregnant is the fact that there have been no studies done to prove it is safe (but when progesterone is what keeps a pregnancy healthy I do not see why we would need studies? but maybe, as you said, for higher amounts than normal)

The reasons I suggest not to take it if your progesterone levels are fine are:

If you take it pre-O on accident (say you think you Oed but you actually didn't) you will not O that cycle and likely not get AF until you stop taking the progesterone... making you think you are pregnant when you are not. If you do not need it, this is an unnecessary risk that could completely throw a cycle out the window. (Some hormonal birth control are nothing more than progesterone which keeps you from ovulating)

Even if you take it post-O you WILL get all symptoms of pregnancy, due to the fact that progesterone is what causes you to get pregnancy symptoms pre-AF... even if you are not pregnant you will be convinced you are by the bleeding gums, sensitivity to smells, tender breasts and nausea... which all can easily be caused by increase in progesterone. I see this happen here almost every time a woman starts progesterone and if she ends up not pregnant she is completely crushed because she was so convinced she was.

But most of all, if your hormone levels are fine you do not want to mess with them and screw it all up. If you are having problems getting pregnant with perfectly fine hormone levels, there are other things that can be done to find out why (like an HSG which has the added benefit that if your tubes are blocked it will actually usually clear them out in the procedure that looks for them... unless they are blocked bad enough to still show up on the HSG in which case they can be fixed. Blocked tubes can easily prevent pregnancy.... or an SA which could show something wrong with the male which could very easily be corrected)

After all, hormones are not the only cause of infertility and problems.....>>>

.......>>>TTC.

If you are taking prometrium (which I believe is a prescription) then I would assume that your levels have been tested and are low, correct? In which case that would not apply to you. Mostly that post was explaining why I believe that women should not self medicate with progesterone when they have not been tested for a low.

But, it will not cause you to conceive, it will only help conception stick if it happens and you need the prometrium to stay pregnant. Any given month that you are TTC you only have a 20-30% chance of pregnancy (given all sorts of factors and assuming your timing is perfect) so failure to conceive any given month does not become a problem until it becomes months and months of trying... and I do not think the progesterone has anything to do with this for you, you could still have your month!

Im not quite sure what more clarification you need? Feel free to ask specific questions.

it is a prescription, and really it only helps it stick to the point that it does help fluff the endometrium slightly if you have low progesterone, and it keeps af at bay. it doesnt really do anything more than that to help it stick, if it wouldnt on its own already. it's just replacing the normal level of progesterone someone would have if they didnt have the lpd.
