nightime diapering

okay, we are trying to figure out the best nightime diapering set up.

I keep reading about overnight diapering but I just can't seem to let him go ALL night without a change. I just imagine stewing in a wet diaper for hours and hours and I can't handle it. I have cut it down to one diaper change per night with a diaper+cotton doubler+wool doubler+heavy wool cover but unfortunately that still equals one time at night where he basically fully wakes up.

I'm curious to know what others do at night?

Is it okay to cut out the 3am changing?

are all those layers really enough to tide him over?

I'm ashamed to say we don't do a night time change unless he asks for it. I stuff a FB with a prefold and microfiber insert, add a fleece liner to keep him feeling dry and we're good. I change him when I wake up in the morning. No rash from the diaper.

Now that Charlie isn't pooping at night any more (at least... I hope we're past that stage!) I don't change him at night. He's also not at the stage where any special diapering steps are needed for night. An infant prefold in a Bummi SWW is soaked but not leaky by morning.

I change Fiona every time she wakes up. We EC though, so often I actually just potty her and her diaper stays dry. She squirms and grunts for a long time (like half an hour or more sometimes) if I don't potty her though, so it's actually a lot easier/quicker to just do that. She falls back asleep very easily though.

DD1 used to hate being changed/pottied overnight, and would scream the whole time and then take a long time to go back to sleep. I hated the idea of leaving her in a wet diaper, but eventually used some bamboo ones with a stay-dry liner and wool cover. The liner was so she wouldn't actually feel wet all night long, I figured it was most comfortable. Personally, if you and he can both fall back asleep easily and it makes you feel better, I'd keep the 3am change. But it won't hurt him not to do it.

I actually just bought a mother-ease diaper with staydry and also a doubler for it w/staydry hoping some combination of that will work. I'm also working on more woolies (he's outgrown his) so we can do that, but what I had been doing was a kissaluvs sz 0 w/a hemp insert for a pocket diaper wrapped around the outside of it, inside a swaddlebees ABC Wrap, then longies over it (I'm skeert of waking up soaked), and I was changing him around 5 am, and most nights he wasn't completely soaked, so I probably could have gone longer...

the diaper combo I have him in for his longer stretch is semi ridiculous. His butt is enormous and i wonder if it makes for uncomfortable lopsided sleeping for him. I'm going to take a picture of it tonight because it is so comical.

He actually has been able to fall back to sleep lately (with the exception of a 3 hour long unexplainable grunt fest last night) so I will just keep that middle of the night changing for a while.

Ugh. My DD still has these almost every night. I know it's getting better because some nights she doesn't have them at all and because when she does they've been cut down to anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours, rather than the 7 hours they were a couple weeks ago, but still...I can't sleep when she does that!!!

Re: the big diaper butt, that's something I always worry about too. I'm actually having a custom wool-in-two made by a WAHM. Hopefully it will be absorbent, breathable and trim. Her store is www.chelory.com if you're interested. I do think it would be very uncomfortable to sleep on a giant lump on my butt. DD is a side sleeper, but the issue I had with her other wool night covers was that the crotches were so wide that once I put a diaper inside them, her little top leg just sort of dangled - she couldn't get her legs together. I didn't think it would feel good to have a leg dangling, so I searched out someone who could fix that for me. I should have them next week maybe, so we'll see. I'm very excited.

The grunting is CRAZY! He does it most nights but last night was the longest stint. This morning my husband was like "what, you can't sleep through that?". The messed up thing is that I lie there awake trying to make sure Ruben is okay while my husband sleeps peacefully through it and Ruben even seems to be sleeping through it. How can you grunt that much and be asleep?

As for the wool-in-twos I think what I have is basically the same. I have this with an additional wool soaker pad that I put inside. So maybe the extra hemp diaper I put in too is overboard and he'd be just fine with the interlock cover+the wool soaker+regular diaper. At least he'd be less bulky.

OMG, how cute are those????

Sorry... I might be a cloth diaper junkie. I just bought a crickett's fitted which is supposed to be a good one for night (comes with a snap in soaker) and I also got a couple motherease os fitteds to try out for night, too, but they seriously just arrived yesterday. I'm thrilled with the crickett's, though - they're soft, hemp, and pretty cheap as fitteds go... we'll see how they hold up...

I used Cricketts with my last baby. They held up pretty well, and I plan on using them with DD when she grows into them. I also used (and really liked) Dream-eze with DS. He was a very heavy wetter, and I only had to add a lightweight doubler as he got approached toddlerhood. I usually put an Aristocrat cover or Bummis SWW over the nighttime combo. I'm ashamed to say that I am *still* using 'sposies with DD, since she is so small. I am going to try our cloth on her again in the next few days, since her cord finally fell off, and I think it will be ok if the diaper is a bit high in the rise still. I also liked the bamboo Baby Beehinds, but they were too expensive for me to get excited about buying very many. I found the Dream-eze and the Cricketts worked just as well, but were way less expensive.

off to check out the wool-in-two...

Ahahaha! The exact same thing is happening here. DD still sleeps with us, so I'm lying awake staring at my entire family of 3 other individuals, all sleeping through it, while I'm considering downing a bottle of Benadryl, if that's what it takes to get me to sleep. And I have no idea how someone can make that much noise in their sleep. lol

That would be enough for my DD. Is it all soaked when you change him?

There is a nighttime diaper I really want to try, and now I can't remember what they're called. Helpful, I know. She could do custom embroidery on the backs of them and they were really gorgeous but pretty expensive. Something about owls I think? And it started with an H... Probably won't ring any bells here lol.

Anyway, right now, we just use an infant prefold in a wool or fleece wrap and it works well, but I do change and/or potty her every time she wakes up so I'm not sure if it would be enough all night long. I like that it's not too bulky though. With DD1 after she stopped wanting to be changed at night, her diaper butt was pretty comical.

I was considering Dream-eze, too, but the new ones are $20/each and don't come in fun colors anymore! I figured I'd try crickett's first since they're so much cheaper. I also got a Kissaluvs organic cotton/hemp http://www.kissaluvs.com/organic-cloth-diapers.php but it's a size 2, so it's still a bit big, though my little guy's pushing 13 lbs already. I did put it on him, and it's a bit roomy in the rear, but I could get the legs and belly small enough, which I'm glad for since my other kids slimmed down by 6 months and were no longer chunky babies after that.

I remembered, it was Holden's Landing Bed Bugs. The owl one is a different one that I did try, a wool in two but it didn't work very well for us over night. I would love to try one of the Holden's Landing diapers though.

I was thinking about buying the kissaluvs wool soaker but just spent like 30min on etsy and found sooo many for so much less $$

I know I could make some soakers from all the shrunken sweaters I have under my sewing table but I never seem to make it to my sewing table anymore...

Maybe I should just buy the nursing pads that I keep meaning to make
post #18 of 18
If you just cut the felted sweaters so there's just a biiiiiiig square, lanolize it, and use it as a mat under the baby's butt to protect the bed....

or depending on the size of the sweater, you could use a sleeve as a sleep sack thingy... again, just cut - use the cuff as a waistband, the rest of the sleeve as the sack...
