Looking for bread recipes!

I have decided (finally) to break our dependence on pre-packaged breads and bake our own!! I am looking for some basic bread recipes for the oven (don't have a bread machine). Please, if you are willing, share your favorite recipes - any and all kinds (the easier the better!) Thanks so much!

<3 bread!! i just ordered this book for our library and i'll bet you can find it at a public library near you... it has received many glowing reviews, esp here on mdc. I know you wanted recipes specifically, but there's a basic one in that book that i'll bet someone will post...

Try this one. It is also printed on the back of the King Arthur Flour whole wheat flour bag.

There is tweaking room to customize... like for ingredient substitutions, etc...

Also, they have live chat on their website so any questions you have can be answered real fast ( I had to use this today ). They also have a toll-free number to call and talk to a baker if you run into any problems (I have used this in the past). Very helpful!

The problem with that book is I just made a lot of sticky buns.

I was just coming here to ask the same thing. I've only ever made sourdough bread, and I need a non-sourdough recipe!

I found this Tasty White Bread and made it last night, and it turned out really well! I used 3 cups of ww flour and 3c of unbleached. It didn't need the 6th cup, but I don't know how exact my water measuring was.

I still think I prefer my sourdough bread. It's a little easier, imo (or maybe just because it's what I'm used to), because I don't do the 2nd rise after kneading. I knead it, put it in the loaf pan to rise for 2 hours, then bake. I don't know if you can do that with regular yeast bread or not.

For those who want to try the Artisan bread in five minutes a day, but who don't have access to the book mentioned in the second post, you can find the basics here: http://www.motherearthnews.com/Real-Food/Artisan-Bread-In-Five-Minutes-A-Day.aspx

I've been using the basic recipe for some time now and my whole family loves it. My sister uses spelt in hers, but I'm not sure what adjustments she makes. It's a very versatile way to make bread. And easy!

One thing I do different... I have a hard time getting the dough off the peel onto my stone in the oven, so I put the dough to rise on a fresh sheet of parchment paper (found at the grocery store next to the wax paper and tin foil) on the peel. Then, after it has risen, I slide the whole thing, paper and all, onto my stone. Easy! And no deflating of my loaf.
