My Annual Visit to the Allergies Forum LOL UPDATE post 6

I need to some guidance...again. The old Dermatologist or Allergist question...

Conner is 6 and has had eczema off and on since 6 months old (was allergic to soy and egg from my breastmilk at the time but outgrew by a year old). Add to that coughing (especially in the night and morning) and nose bleeds. Including a nose bleed at 2:30 this morning that took me 30 minutes to get under control.

His skin is a mess right now. We are using topical med (I would have to look at the script for a name) and vanicream as the moisture).

I keep debating to take him back to the Dermatologist and or set up an appointment with an Allergist.

I am so confused!

The coughing, you think that's sinus drainage?

The nosebleed--any idea why? Are they altogether atypical, or just not usually so hard to stop? Has he been picking at his nose, maybe because it feels bad, or maybe he's been blowing his nose a lot?

My son gets nosebleeds, but so so I, and my mom, a few aunts and my grandma, they get worse with fish oils, after long days in the sun, and better with supplementation of vitamin K2. Just in case anything rings a bell there.

The vit K may help regardless of the cause, since that _does_ seem like a long time to take to stop, DS has only taken that long once or twice, and that's when he was really underdosed with K. I use Thorne K2, a liquid that's 1mg per drop, and since DS and I need insanely high amounts, we take a couple 5mg capsules each day as well--which unless something about my family history rings some bells, I'd assume you wouldn't need.

In general, I'd go back to considering one or more foods problematic. Symptoms seem to shift over the years. Top offenders include gluten, dairy, and soy, and clearly egg would be potentially suspect for you.

The nosebleeds I figure are because the membranes of his nose are dried out. Caused by allergies ....I think. He has had a few recently, but this one was gushing out. I doubt he was picking at it since he was asleep when it happened. He had one Monday morning too.

I talked with the nurse at school today and she said he had one last week.

Would a humidifier at night help the nosebleeds?
Corn is on the list of top contenders.
Eczema can be from environmental allergies, food allergies, or food intolerances. If he's had it since 6 months old, I'd say it's something he's eating himself (usually environmental allergies don't happen that young). The top contenders were already mentioned: dairy, gluten, soy, corn, and egg. You could get an intolerance test, or try eliminating. Keep a food journal.
Coughing sounds like post nasal drip (and if that's recent, then that might be environmental allergies). It can also be reflux (like my SIL).

Yes it is a steroid.

So I took him to the Ped yesterday to get the referral to an Allergist. Well the poor kid is wheezing. The Ped said he very well could have asthma. He is having alot of kids come in lately wheezing and not have a diagnosis of asthma. Damn pollens.

They did a breathing treatment and he did breath better after it. The Ped is going to call a referral in for use. I will follow up on Monday. I sure as heck don't want to wait till September for him to be seen. Thats what Children's Hospital wait time is. We are going to try Cardinal Glennon. I am not sure of the wait time yet. They want the referral first.
