You, having a baby

Thread Starter
I'm looking for a naturally minded review of the book You, Having a Baby by the Dr. Oz team. I'm considering it for my SIL, who is having her first.

I have skimmed the book enough to know that it stresses breastfeeding as the preferred method of feeding a baby, and mentions that vaccines are a topic to discuss with one's doctor, not a given.

Can anyone give me a "naturally minded" review of this book?

Thanks

I only skimmed it, as well, but everything I saw in it looked very medical-model and interventionist. For instance, there is a section called "induction junction" or something like that. It said something to the effect of "your doctor will start talking about induction once you reach 40 weeks" and it was presented as a normal, necessary thing.

Again, I only skimmed, and these are not direct quotes, but at a quick glance, I didn't like it.

ETA: I also have a bit of a bias against pregnancy books written by men.

I own the book ~ and I'm basically satisfied with it. I was impress to see how open they are to homebirth and midwife care. Yes, there are a lot of main stream Dr. ideas in it - but they also talk about other natural methods.

I was most impressed with how they talk about vac ~ they even tell what they did with their own children (including NOT giving shots in the hospital)

I was given as a gift, and I liked it. It had a nice bit on epigenetics, and was reasonably natural-minded for a mainstream book, if that makes sense. Maybe I'll pull it out after dinner and see if I can remember more to tell you.

i own it, and think it has some really good info--i definitely learned some new things that i had not read in the million other pregnancy books i have read. that being said, i too feel that it is VERY medically minded. not the book i would give someone who is uninformed about their choices, as it makes several interventions seem totally normal.

a book i highly recommend is "from the hips" by 2 women, rebecca something and ceridwen something. the book is brutally honest and has every option under the sun listed in a non judgmental way. it's a great intro to a woman's choices.

I thought it was a great choice for the middle ground parent-to-be. It talks about both medical stuff and natural stuff. I would recommend it.
