Gnats in the backyard!

We have gnats everywhere outside!

This is our first year in this house. I remember when we looked at the house last summer I thought there were a lot of them. But we didn't move in until the fall and it wasn't a problem then.

They're back and, according to the neighbors, stay around all summer. It's horrible - they swarm all around you as soon as you're in the yard! I have to keep swatting them out of my face while I garden

Anyone have any solutions for getting rid of them or keeping them under control?

That sounds awful. I would ask what the neighbors do about them. Anyone else have any ideas?

I can't wait to hear what people suggest. I was swarmed yesterday as I tried to get the garden ready. I was hoping the wind would blow them away but they stayed close. We only have this problem in the very backyard, the front or even the backyard close to the house seems to be fine.

We are looking into something called mosquito barrier (a concentrated garlic liquid)...maybe something like that will work?

I'm not sure what eats gnats, but introducing some natural predators might help. Maybe praying mantis? Ladybugs? Lacewings?
