How many prefolds will I need as she grows?

I'm using prefolds & covers on my DD (6wks), and loving it! But she's growing and I need to purchase some more of the next size up. As I'm looking at my options, some one-size pocket dipes caught my eye and I started doing some calculations. Or rather, I'm trying to do some calculations, and I have a few questions...

1. I'm currently using 36 prefolds. Will I need the same number of them at each different size as my DD grows? Or I will need fewer/more because of changing patterns of bm/urine?

2. With pocket dipes, I see they recommend washing every other day. I'm currently doing my prefolds every 3 days. Would I be able to get away with fewer pockets than prefolds?

Thanks for any help!

Our LO are the same age
However this is round two in Cloth diapering so I have BTDT... I too am finding 3 dozen a god prefold size stash at this age..
for the infant stage I find 2 dozen becoems a doable abount
by toddler 18 was adequate and for my late PT we eventually made do with around 12.. Now I always had a few other things in the mid as well so consider that. One size can very well be a great cost effective buy. there just not my favorite choice. But do consider.
24 prefolds and 6 covers in sizes NB-toddler will run roughly $250-$350 depending on cover choice type of prefolds ect..

VS 24 one size pockets roughtly $300-$600 depending on choice

Thanks for the reply, Deanna! Can I ask you why you don't like about one size diapers? I haven't tried any yet, but I was looking at the Bum Genius 3.0 one size.

if i may butt- in! dh loves the bg os , and the daycare provider does too. i just prefer cotton next to dd's bum. i feel like it would be more comfortable and healthier for her skin than the synthetic materials. she is with dh or the daycare provider weekdays during the days, so i make sure to put her in cotton or hemp with a wool cover when i get home and change her frequently to help air her bum out. i really think its just a personal preference. try a few things and see what you end up liking most, then sell what you aren't as fond of and buy more of what struck your fancy.

oooh, thanks, Leah, I completely forgot about that. I do prefer natural fibers, so that is a concern. Are there any one size dipes with natural fibers against baby's skin? I'm more concerned with having something my SIL might be more comfortable with, since I'm totally happy with the prefolds/covers.

hmm.. that makes me think of another question... Do people who use prefolds generally like to continue using them as baby gets older? Or is there some reason fitteds or pockets become preferable?

There's any number of them. Bububebe, S'bish, BSRB, Muttaquin, LittleBeetle, GoodMama, Baby Beehind, Clover, Disana Tie, etc. Those are just the ones I have in my stash. All need a cover.
