Do you mostly use pins/snappies or do you do trifolded in a cover? I can't see doing the pins/snappies, but I'm curious how well trifolded prefolds work? I have to assume you're more likely to get poo on the cover, right? I'm considering trying this for when we're home and maybe at night... am I crazy?

we use a snappi. it isn't that hard really. many people do like to fold the prefold in thirds and lay it in the cover, but that doesn't work with this kid for some reason. all you do is fold the prefold in thirds, and lay it in the middle of a wrap style cover, and then fasten. pretty easy.

I use a snappi, folding doesn't work for me, I must be doing it wrong!

We gave up on the pins/snappis months ago. I could never figure out a fold that actually kept poop from getting on the cover anyway so I just resigned myself to having to wash the cover for every poop & went with the easier/faster trifold into the cover.

I do still use pins occassionally if I want ds to go coverless for a bit.

We use a snappi, IME the diaper is too thick to go threw and hold securely. I don't like trifolding and laying in the cover because she gets really bad sagging. I know silly reason lol.

I have found if I just trifold the poo doesn't stay in the diaper but some people don't seem to have a problem it seems.

Tri-folding is a sure way to soil the cover for us (still EBF). We snappi tightly and get poo on the cover only once or twice a day. On a side note, I was having a lot more dirty covers when I at the end of the PF size- I went up to the next size and it greatly reduced the blowouts, even if it was a bit bulkier.

I used to just trifold the diaper in the front, but the back part I let "fan out" if that makes any sense. If there was any poo involved, even if I thought it didn't get on the cover, I still changed the cover anyway.

However, now that the Little One is mobile (has been crawling for a few weeks), his diaper would shift all over the place, so now I use Snappis, but I use the toddler size ones. It seems to be working out fine so far. :-)

I can't trifold. My guy is so skinny that his covers barely stay on him as it is - they don't need the prefold helping to pull them off.

Of course, we also mostly use wool, and I definitely can't trifold with that. The Snappi totally intimidated me at first, and I'll admit the first 3 or 4 times I use it I had to Snappi the whole diaper on and then go back and re-do every arm of the Snappi so the dipe was tight enough. But after doing that a few times I got the hang of it.

I find the snappi to be really easy to use. We don't have many blow-outs on either kid in diapers (2yr old and 4 mo old).

I just fold and put the diaper in the wrap unless I'm using a wool cover. I'm not very good at using the snappi, and it seems like even with it I end up getting poop on the covers, so tend to not reach for the wool. I have lots of covers that I got inexpensively or free and handmedowns(I just packed up the newborn covers I had been using, and there were...*gulp* TWELVE) so I don't have to worry about running out of covers.

If I had fewer covers (and had to pay $10+ each to get more) I'd probably make myself learn to snappi well, at least for the newborn stage when they're pooping a zillion times a day. We definitely soiled 5 or 6 covers a day for a few weeks! But if you're prepared to deal with dirty covers every time they poop, trifolded prefolds work just fine. The poop never escapes our bummis or proraps.

Both.. I snappi a lot both because one size prefold I use is a little big still so I fold down the excess and snappi. I also go coverless around the house a lot so tend to snappi those. Right now I'm using my snappi more than my pins though I like pins too..

I'm also loving the ease of trifolding and I like how I can maximize the assorbancy of my NB prefolds doing this.

I haven't had major blow out issues in eaither the snappied or the trifolded method. I've had to change out a cover because of poo just as often with a snappied prefold and when trifolding but it has been rare.

Snappi for me

I can't fit my covers over a sm GMD trifold. It's easy and I haven't had a blow out in cloth since I started last week (3 month old girl who blows EVERY darn time). I have cotton GMD prefold, GMD sm fitted, assorted cotton fitteds with inserts and I prefer wool covers.

I don't do either. I don't tri-fold and I don't use pins/a snappi. Instead, I use whatever fold I would (bikini twist, newspaper, whatever) if I was pinning and just pull the cover up to velcro or snap. It is as fast as tri folding, but seemed to keep more of the poo in the diaper and off the cover.

Hmmm... think I'd be able to trifold or just do what SeekingJoy said at night? Or would I need a snappi?
I am one of the few that is not a trifold fan. I don't like that much cover touching baby, I know, I am weird. Anyway, we use the snappi through DDs whole CD time. I found that the jelly roll, snappied then cover almost alway contained the poo. Seriously, we had maybe 3 leaks into the cover and I am pretty sure those were because of DH's lack of folding skills. This time I am branching into pins but DH will still be a snappi man, I know he would pin the baby. The snappi is really simple and really requires no time at all. I would just buy one and see if ya love it, if not no big deal.

Actually, I think I have a few snappies around here somewhere (lots of diapering hand-me-downs from my cding friends), but only newborn prefolds and my little guy is already well past 12 lbs, so they don't so much fit... I'm considering getting more to try it out.

What are the preferences on prefold brands? I like the ones they have at green mountain diapers, but only based on the way they look so nice and fluffy...

our gmd prefolds are our fav, but there are other brands people like other reasons. i like the way the gmd prefolds are cut- a little wider and shorter.

GMD has soft dipes consistently, but I have 2 dozen Littlelions capri's that are really soft and fluffy as well. My infant sized LLs weren't incredibly soft, but not scratchy or stiff by any standard.

Personally, I'm CDing for the price, so I went for the LLs because they're sometimes half the price of the GMDs (if you buy seconds, which rock) and I like the way they fit.

We use premium prefolds, fastened. We almost always use a Snappi, but I just got some pins and I am please with the ease of use. We Snappi because we always have. We had cheap pull on covers with our first child, so we had to. Now that we use wraps, I still like to. It keeps messes in and seems to have a trimmer fit. I have found that Snappis are easier to use after they stretch out a bit. They are pretty stiff the first few uses and not as easy to put on.
We use an angelwing fold. We fold the extra length over in the back, towards the baby. I think this also helps keep poo from going out the back of the diaper.

Yeah, I did notice they seem a bit more expensive than other prefolds... considering you can get a dozen for not much over the price of an AIO, it doesn't seem so bad, though. Up to now I've had AIOs, pockets and fitteds, but the pockets we had for DD and DS1 are pretty worn out and the elastic is going, so I thought i'd try something else this time... and now I'm brave enough to consider prefolds. LOL well, and the price is good, and I know some people LURVE their prefolds, so I thought it was worth a good try. I tried the gerber crappy prefolds that I had as burp cloths and they were, of course, terrible, which I realize now is because the stuffing is polyfill
