5mo. baby cries & fusses all evening

I work and my DP stays home with our DD. For the past two weeks, DD has been fussy and sad from the moment I get home (5pm) until bedtime (7:30-8pm). I soothe her, rock her, sing to her and nurse her.

Is this a phase or is it her temperament? I'm starting to get sad because I never spend time with a happy, smiley baby...

How is she sleeping during the day with DP? Could she possibly be having trouble getting enough sleep during the day, for whatever reason? When I hear evening crankiness, my first thought is that baby may be overtired. An extra nap late in the day, for instance, might help ensure that you come home to a happier babe.

I agree. Evening fussiness is often due to too little sleep during the day. Check with your dp to see when she is napping and if he can maybe push her latest nap a little later in the afternoon so she's not so tired when you get home.

My little guy used to begin his descent into misery every evening at around 5 pm. It drove me nuts because he was so darn tired but it was too early to put him to bed. His last nap was usually 12:30 to 2:30, so it made sense that he was tired, but he just couldn't wait any later to take that noonish nap, so I found a solution that worked for him. I used to lay him down at 5 pm (the instant he started to fuss) and let him fall asleep. Then I'd go and open his door so he'd only sleep 20 minutes or so. That little cat nap usually would cheer him up and he'd be fine until 8 p.m. when he went to bed for the night. Cat naps don't work for all babies, but it got us through those times. Eventually as he got older he didn't need that cat nap anymore which sure made things easier.

My dd was doing the same thing, and I figured out she was just overtired. I started giving her a late nap, not long, but around 5, 5:30 she sleeps for about 30-40 min. The fusiness stopped and she was like a new baby.
eta: The late nap does not interfere with bedtime, or sleeping at night.

My 5mo does the same thing if she hasn't napped enough during the day. She needs 3 naps a day, anything less and she gets really grumpy that evening.

Teething maybe? I swear my son was more irritable in the evening with his teeth. He got his first tooth at 5.5 months.

we went through something similar and it turned out to be an ear infection. ds was fussier/cried more in the evenings, was waking more at night and didn't seem his usual self. it took me a couple of weeks to figure out something was wrong (when he finally started refusing to nurse laying on his side).

we have been having trouble with naps, but i never put 2 and 3 together! thanks ladies. we're trying to develop more of a nap schedule this week, so hopefully we can get in a 5pm-ish nap. thanks for the advice.
