Toddler is allergic to everything!

Does anybody here have any experience with a child who is literally allergic to every single food?
My 2 year old nephew has just tested positive for allergies to practically everything except for meat and potatoes. We knew he is anaphylactic to peanuts, severely allergic to milk, and possibly celiac, but today we learned that his allergy panels came back with the results that he's reacting to everything. His immune system is basically overreacting to everything he eats, particularly the things he eats often.
He's been placed on a rotation diet to minimize reactions.
This is so baffling. We've never ever heard of this before. Does anyone know anything about this condition, the prognosis.... any insights?
Thank you.

Sounds like Jessica's (ChangingSeason) daughter. Hopefully she'll weigh in soon. Was this a RAST test? Because I think there's some false positives to that.

Yep, I have one of those toddlers. She is allergic to most meats, most grains, most fruits, all seeds, nuts, dairy, fish... veggies seem to be the one thing that are generally ok. Wait- not true, she's allergic to a few of those as well.

eta: I have the list of all the foods she tested positive to on my blog, if you're curious.

kjbrown92: Thanks. I'm not sure of the exact nature of the test,. They took him to a naturopath on the advice of their pediatrician. This is what they tested for:

He tested positive for everything except meat and white potatoes.

Changingseasons: Thank you! I'll check out your blog and pass it on. Do you know what causes the condition, and is your daughter on a rotating diet as well? Is the prognosis usually good for kids outgrowing this?
Thanks so much everyone!

Whoa. He literally tested positive to every single thing on that list except potatoes and meat?! What lab did they use? Was it an ELISA or ALCAT or...? Were these rated as high/med/low positives? With that kind of list, I would only take out the highest positives and watch for changes. You definitely don't want to go down to meat and potatoes, because that will make things worse by causing nutritional deficiencies.

My DD has a mix of IgE and IgG allergies, we're still figuring out which are which. We don't do a rotation diet because really, we just don't have enough safe foods to rotate. I'm trying to slowly add things so that we can rotate, but it seems like we fail 9 out of 10 food trials... so it's pretty slow going.

eta: I wanted to add- on our ELISA, there were only 1 or 2 things that came up completely negative for DD, but only about 1/2 the foods were a high enough positive to be considered a "true" positive. Maybe that's the case for this kiddo too? It blows my mind that you'd be getting an actual positive to that entire list. If that is really the case, I would probably test again with a different lab, just to be sure.

He tested positive to some degree on everything, yes, except white potatoes and meat. From what I understand their only option is to do as you're doing, and just feed him from less-reactive foods. They'll also keep those foods in constant rotation to avoid increasing his sensitivity.

I'm not sure of the exact kind of testing, my sister didn't really want to get into details as it's understandably quite upsetting for them right now. The testing was done by Rocky Mountain Analytical. I'll ask her if it's possible to get a second test with a different lab done.

I found your blog very informative I'll definitely be passing it on to her. One thing that stuck out for me were the causes. I don't think anyone has realized yet that this will affect how they vaccinate him too, what with the contents of vaccines. Fascinating.

There is a huge difference between IgE and IgG allergies. IgE are considered true allergies (like your anaphlactic ones are). IgG are consider more intolerances. My son has a tremendous list of IgG allergies/intolerances also and is on a very very limited diet. We also do a rotation diet because his history has shown us that if he eats anything back to back for a couple of days he will react to it.

I agree, with a list that huge, eliminate the highest/strongest positives and rotate the rest of them if he tolerates them that way. A food journal is a MUST here!!

I would highly recommend getting him on some sort of probiotic.....his safest bet would be water kefir. You can get grains (and I have a bunch dehydrated if you want some) and make it yourself at home with whatever safe sugar he can tolerate. My son can only tolerate pure maple syrup. This will help with gut healing. Since we started the water kefir with my son, that is all he drinks now....and we have seen some improvement in his intolerances. He's not healed, but his reactions aren't near as bad as they used to be.

Also, he needs to get on a good multivitamin to make sure he's getting the appropriate vitamins and minerals that he won't get on a restricted diet. It doesn't work for everyone, but my son takes Nano VM from Solace nutrition. It's a powder supplement, and a complete vitamin (100% of RDA). It is free of all major allergens and is considered hypoallergenic. Without it, my son would not be thriving like he his.
