Mini pots of plants as party favours?

My DS is turning 2 soon.

For the party favours I thought I would get mini clay pots (bell pot size or so) and either pre-plant something (not likely though since we're in a condo that faces north..little direct sun)

OR

Get some seeds & soil (bagged in the pot) and let them plant it.

The question is....what seeds do I get? Flowers, herbs? It needs to be something that can survive in a very small pot.
Unless of course they choose to sprout only & transplant...but I doubt everyone will do that?
My first thought was sunflowers....but...uh....small pot is not going to cut it.

I'm a total newbie, so I don't know where to go from here. I would love any suggestions or thoughts you might have Thank you.

Marigolds are easy and don't need anything too big, but I'm not sure how big of a pot you're talking about. I would think a single marigold could do nicely in a 4-5 inch pot.

What a fantastic idea!! My first thought is an fragrant herb, like rosemary or something. You could use little cuttings. Aloe would be sweet and so handy
Marigolds are lovely, too...

my dd had a strawberry themed birthday one year and everyone took home a strawberry plant.

I think that's a great idea! I know my kids would love it. My 3 year old just planted sunflowers in preschool and they came in these little kits with the seeds, soil, cup and instructions. He's having a great time with it.

We have been to a couple weddings where the guests got potted plants, once when my kids where small they got bamboo at a wedding.

It seems no matter how old they were at the time, they loved this!

I don't really think it matters what grows, they just seem to love everything lol.

Thanks ladies

I went with strawberry/sunflower plant idea.

I got small clay pots that DS & I will paint names on (would be a great craft for the party, but we're having it at an indoor playground)

I bought some organic potting soil that I will bag & put in the pot (makes for less messy travel)

I will put out the seeds in little bags separately with basic planting instructions, that way each family can choose if they want the strawberry or sunflower (since the sunflower will need to be transplanted or direct seeded into the garden) The pot is big enough for the strawberry plant to live. It's basically a little kit to grow it.

I couldn't start any of the seeds at home since we have no space or direct sun.

It does require the families to do the seeding, & maintenance of course - but I thought it would be unique.

I realized that this was actually cheaper than buying 3-4 cheap things to stuff in a gift bag anyway which is great b/c we're having a lot of kids.

Thank you again

Sounds wonderful! The kids will love that.

What a neat idea! We just had dd's birthday party and that would have been a much better alternative. I will store that idea for next year.
