Maine Coon ~ how much grooming will he need?

DH and I are seriously considering adopting a Maine Coon mix cat from the shelter, but I'm a little worried about how often he will need to be brushed. We currently have two older domestic shorthairs that pretty much take care of their own fur. Does a longhaired cat like a Maine Coon need to be brushed daily? Weekly? Will I be swimming in fur ?

They will need to be brushed at least a few times per week. You could take the easy route and take him to a groomer and have his belly shaved out. Lion cuts are popular too, but if you just want to prevent matting, shaving his belly and arm pits can help a ton too.

Generally maine coons are pretty laid back and tolerate grooming well, but definitely ask the staff at the shelter how he does, and he even try it while you're there. Last thing you want is to get him home and have to wear oven mitts to groom him. LOL

As far as grooming goes, a good comb or rake would be all you'd need.
