just started a trial...help? leaked everywhere.

Hello mammas,

I just started a trial with some cloth diapers through a store in my city...they let you try out 8 diapers for a fee, and then bring them back and you can buy what you like on a discount. Its a nice program because it lets you try out different brands.

I took a BumGenius, two swaddlebees, a happy heinys, rumparooz, and some thirsties.

All of them, which the exception of the BG and the rumparooz LEAKED horribly after just 1.5 hours!! And the girls, who normally are quite content, were very unhappy with them. My girls are 9 lbs, roughly...is this a sizing issue? An insert issue? All were pocket diapers. I also tried a kissaluv with a thirsties cover...same thing.

I did wash them first, per the recommendation of the store: three times with their detergent, and then the hot cycle in the dryer.

Help? I have twins and I really want this to work.

What did you stuff the pocket diapers with?

They came with the pads. So just one of whatever they came with. My nanny was the one who did it, and I know she just put one pad in each. Do people put more than one in?

How old is your baby? Even fairly young, I had to use two inserts. The diapers need to be fairly snug. Could be the one-size diapers were just too big. Are they gappy around the legs?

Where did they leak? Were the inserts soaked (need more absorbancy) or not really (like, did the pee escape before it had a chance to be absorbed)?

at that age , i was changing at least every hour. in fact, i still usually change every hour. i was home yesterday, and went through at least twelve changes with my 1 year old between wake up and bedtime. which pad was the nanny putting in them? i know sometimes they come with two sized soakers. maybe if she was putting in the newborn size, they are actually ready for the bigger size. when she used the kissaluv, was she making sure the absorbant part was tucked in the cover completely? if any is sticking out, the diaper could leak. i never had much luck with kissaluvs honestly. all that said, if there were some diapers that were working for you (you said the bg worked), there's nothing wrong with just getting more of those. not all diapers work for every kid. how often do you normally change your girlies? stick with it, we love cding! the package idea is great, its so cool you found a place near you that sells cds. i'm sure if you needed to you could call them for advice, too. they want you to buy that twin sized stash of diapers, so they should be willing to provice any information you need! lol. also, take some time to use them yourself (if you havent already) and play around with them a bit so that you can get comfortable with them.

The girls are only 9 to 10 lbs, so they are rather small. I'm wondering if it was a size issue. But not all were one-size...the happy heinys and fuzzibuns were small and meant for babies their size.

She said the diapers soaked through the clothes, and she ended up washing everything. When we do it this weekend I'll be better able to see what's going on and what exactly got wet.

I didn't do much prep: they told me to wash three times (first two with the detergent, last without) and then dry on the hot setting. Should I just wash them more to get better absorbancy?

I just find it surprising to read that so many people didn't ever have a problem with leaking, yet almost all of mine did. But normally we can go three hours without a change...this time it was half that. Maybe my expectations are just different?

And does anyone put inserts outSIDE the pocket? Or just inside?

Also, the really big inserts just seem so bulky...is that to be expected? Especially for their size...I'm sure for a toddler it isn't as noticeable, but for a 10 lb baby it does seem rather bulky.

Any tips, advice would be helpful. I really want this to work out.

Just wanted to say I understand! I'm a 1st time mama to my 7week old DD and have also been having a hard time with leaking issues. I had leaks using prefolds, fitteds (thirsties & kissaluvs), pockets (fuzzibunz), and I was changing every 1-2 hours.

I had less leaking with bumgenius all-in-ones, and the thirsties duo diaper. I've sometimes used the hemp inserts that we got with the duo diaper in other diapers and that seems to help with absorbency...maybe you might want to try this? I'm still experimenting with types and brands, but I'm pretty sure I will invest in more hemp inserts.

But I hear you. I like the idea of CDs, but they are super bulky and it has been harder to get the hang of using them than I expected, and I really hope it will get easier.

Like a PP suggested, you have to make sure that the leg openings fit snugly against the baby's thighs or you're going to have leaks, regardless of whether you're using pockets, or fitteds or prefolds with covers.

And remember- just because you can let your girls wear a disposable for 3 hours without it leaking, doesn't mean that that's a good thing Sitting/lying in urine for that long isn't healthy even if the diaper will absorb that much wetness. I don't think you'll find that any daytime cloth diaper will hold 3 hours worth of urine on a regular basis for a young baby who is nursing frequently.

i agree, three hours in a diaper is way too long. i think the 1.5 hrs you got with them is pretty good. it would be helpful if you would let us know about the fit around the legs, as a pp suggested

Thanks ladies. Yesterday went much better. My husband was trying them out, and we did two absorbant pads and no real leaking, except one through the leg (which we now know was a size issue).

One of my girls even pooped in one and it didn't get on her clothes. Good things.

And its good to know that 3 hours is unrealistic. I'll keep that in mind.

Appreciate the help!!
