Travel Narratives

Thread Starter
I've been really getting into travel narrative books lately.

I've read An Embarrassment of Mangoes about a couple that sails the Carribean for 2 years and I recently picked up Dinner With Persephone about a womans year long travel in the Greek Isles and Tales of a Female Nomad a really great book about a woman in her 40's that travels the world.

So anyone have any other good recommendations ??

I don't have any recommendations, however, your suggestion of An Embarrassment of Mangoes reminds me of a couple who I met in the Dominican Republic. They had taken off for 1 1/2 years to go sailing from Boston through the Caribbean and were homeschooling their kids for the whole time. Now that I have kids, no wonder I liked them!

Bruce Chatwin's The Songlines comes up in my mind. It's been a long time since I've read it, but I thoroughly enjoyed the Australian aboriginal cultural history.

There's also an awesome book about a father and son who sailed around the world together and wrote a book -- one chapter by son, next by father. Can't remember what it's called though... found it (gotta love Amazon's search engine -- it's better than the library's) My Old Man and the Sea by David Hays and Daniel Hays.

Happy reading!

I enjoyed reading One Year Off by David Elliot Cohen. It is about a couple who sells everything and goes on a around the world journey with their three young children. It is written in a diary format and includes pictures. A great read.

One of my favorite books of all times falls under this I supposed..."On the Road" by Keroac. Also, "The Dharma Bums" is similar......both make me want to up and leave it all behind and travel........

I went out to the library earlier and looked for the Mangoes book...they're ordering it so I put my name on the list. I couldn't remember the names of the other ones!

"In a Sunburned Country" by Bill Bryson is an awesome, hilarious book about Australia. I also really enjoyed "A Walk in the Woods," by the same author.

I like travel books, too. There's one that comes to mind called , One Year Off. Not amazing in itself (the writing isn't spectacular, for instance) but the story is interesting. A family with three small children decides to travel around the world for one year...very interesting and readable.

A second nod for Bill Bryson's books! They're wonderful. Also, if you haven't read Frances Mays' books about Tuscany, they're really lovely.
