I'm curious as to what I'll be able to grow "well." In the Oklahoma area. Any ideas as to how the dirt is? I really want to do herbs, spaghetti squash, cucumbers and bell peppers to start! Any input would be great!

You might have clay or really nice rich soil it just depends where you are. You'll probably just have to check the soil. Some places you will be able to just till and plant.

You can grow most anything except things like citrus, avocado and things like that. Most heat lovers should be just fine. You could also get some fall planting in for things that like a bit cooler weather.

Tomatoes, (you ought to do tomatoes if you like them, they grow well there ) peppers, cucumbers and squashes should all be fine. I would plant herbs in an area that gets *some* shade rather than full sun all day. That OK sun is HOT! You can grow corns and melons too. You can also grow cotton if you really want.

You cannot just plant and forget in OK. You are going to need to water, mulching is a good idea. If there are trees on the property we just pile up all the branches and such that fall down from storms and then stick them in a wood chipper for mulch.

Here is a list from OSU of things that grow well

Thank You so much for your help! There are no trees on our property We're going to be living in a neighborhood that is being built now, and I think they totally cleared out the land before they started building. But I would like to plant a few trees as well!

If it is new houses then the dirt will probably be clay and terrible.

Well, there is an advantage that you can decide exactly what trees you want to plant. Some grow well in OK that do not in NY.

Okie transplant here...

Most likely you'll have red Ok clay. It stains everything it gets on. My mom always had a fit while doing laundry when I was a kid, lol. My daddy always trucked in some topsoil and ammended it with lots and lots of compost.

We always had Sunchokes, melons, green beans, potatoes, corn, squash, lots of tomatoes, okra, onions, herbs, etc....

Man are OK melons good.
