fever question??? febrile seizure

I have always been in the fever is your body doing it's job to help your body heal camp. We only treated the fever if the child was miserable.

Then this past week my son got very cranky and he had a fever of 103. He slept all day and his temp was down to 100.3 when he woke up. We went out to play in the luke warm baby pool outside. He played a while until he started having a seizure. It was HORRIBLE to watch. I have seen seizures on TV and it isn't the same when it is your kid turning blue, shaking, foaming at the mouth, bleeding from biting his tongue. He seized for 1.5 min and it seemed like an eternity.

I always though febrile seizures were from HIGH fevers but they said it could happen anywhere from 99 degrees on. The ER doc said it could happen again or it could be a one time thing.

If your child has had a febrile seizure do you just wait out the fever and hope they don't have a seizure or do you medicate at the first sign of fever?

I don't ever want to experience that again!!

I know it's horrible! Both my neice and my sister have babies who get seizures. It's so scary. But in most cases, even if it looks horrid, it's not doing any long term damage.

But on the other hand, fever reducing medicines are proving to be more dangerous than doctors ever thought. It's my belief that even in the case of a child who occasionally has a febrile seizure, it's best not to medicate to lower the fever. As you know, the fever is there for a reason. It means the body is doing it's job.

If your doctor feels that this was just a simple febrile seizure unrelated to any brain disorder, then you don't have to worry about it doing brain damage.

My ds1 had a febrile seizure when he was 13 months. It was terrifying.
It was explained to me that it is not the temp but the rapid spike that causes it. Therefore we did medicate for fevers after that one. I feel slightly guilty that I did not medicate him fast enough before his seizure. He never had another one and I think he is probably grown out of it since he is almost 4. I think the doctor told me that babies can't regulate their temp by shivvering so the body throws it into a seizure.

I purchased some FeverAll suppositories just in case I needed a fast acting dose. (They came in handy later when he had the vomiting flu!)

When dd has a fever, we medicate overnight/at naptimes or if she seems sluggish. She had a seizure at 19 months and stopped breathing. I had to give her mouth to mouth and call 911. I am never, ever doing that again if I can help it.
