Around the World in 180 Days

I'm looking into 'Around the World in 180 Days' for the upcoming school year. I haven't used it but a couple of local families have said good things about it.

I'm interested in the kids learning to do a little independent research and this resource looks like it will fit the bill. We'd probably take it along with us on our library days. Next year the kids will be grade 6 and grade 8 aged.

I haven't yet learned how much prep work is involved. We've got a busy year coming up so if it's mom-intensive, we may forgo it.

we use these workbooks as our geography, the one shown would be lower elem. but if you scroll down they give the titles/links to the other workbook levels. I like this website because they tend to give broader samples and not just the index.

This is so not a curriculum, but we've had amazing success with the Oregon Scientific Smart Globe. They are normally $150 I believe, but we got ours at Costco one year for $75. They usually sell them near Christmas time.

Both my kids LOVE it and honestly know so much geography because of it. My nearly 4 year old has been playing with it for 1.5 years and I can ask him where almost anywhere is and he'll go and point it out. It's such a cool tool because they can play on their own (you can even upgrade the software). It can be used as a normal globe but they can also use the smart pen to point out anyplace and it will tell you different information about that place (there are different settings so you can listen to music of the area, listen to facts, or just get the actual name of the place). It's been such a big huge hit in our house I cannot imagine being without it!

We are using an Evan Moor geography unit on North America right now and are enjoying it. I think it's written more for upper elementary; I am just modifying the assignments as we go. I think we might also read one or two of Hollings C. Hollings books (Paddle to the Sea and such) when we are done with the N. Am. unit.
