Transverse Mylitis due to Vaccines?

Hi everyone, My cousin's then 3 year old DD was diagnosed in August of 2009 with Transverse Mylitis. It started with a high fever, vomiting and headache and proceeded to land her in the hospital. They first diagnosed her with viral Meningitis but as she began to loose the use of her legs, they continued to run tests. Eventually they came to the diagnosis of "Transverse Mylitis." After her stay in the hospital lasted weeks and continued PT she now has use of her left leg but no movement in her right. She wears a foot brace and knee brace to help her keep the leg straight so she can get around. It is a really sad situation...With that being said her mother who is a nurse, is starting to question vaccines and whether they might have played a part in this diagnosis. I do not vaccinate and had talked with her about this issue before anything happened. Now I feel like this is a golden oppurtunity for a nurse to "see the light" so to speak :-)
Any advise would be welcome!!!

They've found myelin protein antibodies in those with Guilliane-Barre syndrome and multiple sclerosis. Your poor cousin...Its mind boggling to me that autoimmune disorders crop up in the highly vaccinated and then docs scratch their heads saying, "Gee, what could have messed up this kids immune system so badly?" And in your cousin's case, so badly that the body even thinks the sheathes around the nerves are the enemy.

Most autism clinics (well at least DAN clinics) run a battery of tests that include checking for myelin protein antibodies - so yeah, you wouldn't be alone in thinking there could be a link to vaccines and the immune system going haywire.

To be fair, TM can be caused by things OTHER than vaccines:

Researchers are uncertain of the exact causes of transverse myelitis. The inflammation that causes such extensive damage to nerve fibers of the spinal cord may result from viral infections, abnormal immune reactions, or insufficient blood flow through the blood vessels located in the spinal cord. Transverse myelitis also may occur as a complication of syphilis, measles, Lyme disease, and some vaccinations, including those for chickenpox and rabies. Cases in which a cause cannot be identified are called idiopathic.

Transverse myelitis often develops following viral infections. Infectious agents suspected of causing transverse myelitis include varicella zoster (the virus that causes chickenpox and shingles), herpes simplex, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr, influenza, echovirus, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis A, and rubella. Bacterial skin infections, middle-ear infections (otitis media), and Mycoplasma pneumoniae (bacterial pneumonia) have also been associated with the condition.
So it's not fair to just blame vaccines. Could it be? Sure. Is it 100% certain? Not at all.
