WWYD: Chickenpox

My DH was diagnosed with shingles this morning - the blisters just showed up last night. My boys (4 and 22 mos.) haven't had the CP vax yet, as I was hoping they would get it naturally. So I was excited about the chance to get it, but then I got to thinking - DS1 has 3 weeks of preschool left, and they have a bunch of fun things planned. I would hate for him to miss the fun.

According to what I've read, we can get the CP vax within 3 days of exposure and greatly reduce their chances of getting it, or if they do still get it, it will be milder. If this was all happening a month from now, it wouldn't even be a question in my mind, we would just let things happen. But I'll be sad if DS1 misses anything fun, especially since he's made such good friends at school and since we recently moved, he won't be with them next year.

What would you do? Take the chance that maybe they wouldn't get pox until school is out? Or get the vax tomorrow to hopefully avoid missing school?

Unless your ds touches the blisters on your dh and your dh would need to wash hands after touching the spots before touching your ds as well. The chances of your ds catching cp from him would be near zero since it can only be transmitted via direct contact not like cp which you can catch just being around a carrier.

From what I have read today (think I have shingles myself) the blisters will stay around for awhile so it might still be possible to expose your ds later on.

Getting the vax wouldnt even cross my mind. Not only because the odds of him getting them from your dh is nearly non existent as long as your dh is careful. But because of all the new info coming out about the vax, higher chance of getting shingles at a younger age, the fact he will need boosters from here on out etc. Not worth it especially just because he might miss out on some fun things IMO

You could be vigilant about keeping ds1 away from the blisters. You can puposely expose the little one to the blisters...and he may get them in 2-3 weeks....at which point ds1 would be exposed...and get them 2-3 weeks AFTER school is out. Just a thought.

Yeah, the NP was a bit misinformed about the contagiousness - she said the blisters weren't contagious at all, and from what I've been reading, the opposite is true! She also said that she would recommend that DH be quarantined from the kids for a freaking month! I just laughed at that one - like hell! She was reading him the riot act about the kids not being vaxed, too.

I wonder how long the virus stays active outside the body - maybe I could get a few Q-tips and dip them in the blister-juice and keep them around for a month or so. LOL

Yep the NP was off on that one since the blisters are all the is contagious at least the stuff inside them is.
