I think the Toddlerhawk is just a couple inches longer than the Babyhawk. I got a toddlerhawk when my DS was 13 mos and was glad I did b/c even though I rolled up the bottom once or twice in the beginning, it was only a couple months until he needed the whole length of the body to support his back. He would've been too tall for the babyhawk.
I would say both could be used with a small infant - just that he body of the Toddlerhawk would need to be rolled several times before you tied it on (and likely the babyhawk would need to be rolled in the very beginning).
It wouldn't be my first choice wih a newborn, but you could start with a toddlerhawk and use it through your babywearing years. Some may even get by with babyhawk through toddlerhood depending on the length of the baby's torso, and how they prefer to be worn (ie with arms out or in, do they arch back a lot, etc.).

From their FAQ:
"We have three options for our carriers: the regular Mei Tai (approx 16.5 x 21.5) and the Toddler Mei Tai (which is 3 inches taller than the regular mei tai, approx 16.5 x 23.5)
The Regular Mei Tai BabyHawk is great for all children from the newborn right up through the toddler years. The Toddler Mei Tai is meant for older children AT LEAST 18 MONTHS or older."
We have the regular babyhawk and it works well for infancy through toddlerhood. My 3 1/2 year old is too big for it.
For the newborn period, it's not my favorite (I tend to use a stretchy wrap or sling for the first month or two).

My ds is 6 months but very big for his age. I have a woven wrap which I absolutely love but I'm looking for something to replace my Beco and Ergo. I find the buckle across my shoulders digs in and I think I'd prefer straps that can be criss-crossed in the back.
I suppose I should go for the babyhawk although at the rate he's growing...

i have a friend who borrowed my baby hawk for a few months and when she decided to buy her own, went for a toddler size. her DS was around 6mo old. it worked for them because he had a long torso and didn't mind being worn with his arms inside the carrier. plus, she walked a lot (no car) and needed the extra length for good neck/head support when he fell asleep.
so, although most people wouldn't buy a toddler size for a baby under 1yr it's not totally unheard of. like another poster said, if it's too tall you can always roll the body once or twice.

Do you only need the Toddlerhawk if the baby is willing to have arms in? In the Ergo my 13 month old will keep his arms in or out, but in the Babyhawk he feels too restricted and needs arms out-- so I can't imagine him liking the Toddlerhawk. BUt truthfully the BH just sucks for us right now and the Ergo is our go-to carrier, even though we have dozens.
