Halifax Mama's I need help finding a home

Ok so we are moving to Halifax as soon as we can find a place to live. Hoping June, but might be July by the time we get organized.

Anyways I was just wondering if anyone has an opinion about the ocean breeze estates in Dartmouth beside the McKay bridge. The website looks really nice, rent is cheep and it's close to downtown Halifax. Is this a "good" neighbourhood?

It probably isn't the greatest area, I know people who would not choose to live there. I wouldn't but not for the same reasons.

Between the two bridges is what is considered "north end" Dartmouth. It can be a tough neighbourhood, though there are parts of it I really like, especially close to the MacDonald Bridge. As you go further toward the McKay, it gets less desirable.

The area you are looking at has a lot of newer places and may be a bit nicer. My concern is that it would not actually be the best as far as closeness to other things - it isn't a good walking area, there is no grocery store, you can't walk or bike the McKay bridge. With a car it would be ok. There are a lot of buses, but they have a way to go to get anywhere.

What kind of place are you looking for? An apartment or townhouse, number of bedrooms? What kind of things do you need to be near? Do you have a car?

Mamawithstars, we're fairly close by eachother now and will be doing the same move in either late July or early August. Have you found a moving company already? U-haul is very expensive and by driving a truck out and back with Discount (still cheaper than U-haul) we'd go slightly over the max. kms. I'm not sure what we'll do for the move yet.

I'm not sure where we'll be moving once we get there either, it'll depend on where I get a job (DH is going to Dal). I was looking more at staying on the peninsula or going up Bedford way. From a Southern-Ontario perspective I was thinking Bedford was a long drive, but if you mapquest it it's only a 20min drive to the city centre, so we'll see!

Oh, and if you haven't yet, check out kijiji, there are TONS of rental ads on there. I know it's still hard to choose an area, but it's a great resource with lots of ads. The dal student paper or classifieds will have lots of rentals too, though I've been stalking kijiji the most.
