Birth control pills and missed periods

I went off the pill about 3 months ago, and have missed 2 periods. I took pregnancy tests, and they came up negative. I'm coming up on when my period should be again, so I figured I'd ask what you guys think.

Is it normal to miss periods when you go off the pill? How many times should I miss before contacting my doctor? I'm asking primarily because I have what my doctor thinks might be a hiatal hernia (usually there are no symptoms, but sometimes there are really awful ones, and I have all of them), and I need to be keeping an eye out for new symptoms while waiting for tests to tell me if I do have that or if something else is wrong (and new symptoms might mean the latter). I read online that after going off the pill sometimes it takes a while for periods to start back up (one said 6 months, another said 3), but I trust this site more than yahoo answers.

Also, I had a pap right before I went off the pill, and she said everything looks good and that I'm fine for trying to get pregnant (even with the possible hiatal hernia).

Going off the pill can certainly temporarily cause long and/or anovulatory cycles. But I think you should have had at least one period in 3 months. Were your periods regular before you started the pill? How long were those cycles?

also, what pill were you taking? Different pills contain different hormones in different amounts... and if you were taking one that was primarily progestins I would say this is a very odd side effect, but for some of the other pills this could be totally normal.

I WOULD talk to my doctor about it if I were you though, if nothing else they can give you a simple blood test to check if you are anovulatory (progesterone under 5 usually means anovulatory by this point) and put you on progesterone for a week or two to try to kick start a new cycle (this is actually a really common thing and if you are anovulatory will not harm anything but will signal to your body to start a new cycle)

I was on trinessa.

I was kind of regular...no period in three months didn't really happen, but sometimes my period would last two weeks, and sometimes I would skip a month, or it would be a few weeks late. I've never had anything like this before.

I'll try to see my doctor, we've been having trouble getting my husband in to see them because they've been so busy. Wish my health care was better than this, but this is pretty much all of NM right now. We apparantly have a REALLY severe doctor shortage (not just regular doctors, my little brother needed a neurologist due to a bunch of horrible seizures, and he actually got transported to another hospital, hoping there MIGHT be a neurologist there!). I'll try to call them and see if there's any way we can do this without an appointment. This is my other reason for wanting to post here first!

I went off the pill (Lo/Ovral) last July. It took me 2-3 months to get my first non-pill-induced period. From what I understand, the first 3-6 months when coming off the pill can be very irregular.

I would see if your doctor can call in a request for bloodwork; then you wouldn't have to actually get in to see them, but they can order the tests and get the results back.
