Is there a reason for the empty tummy?
I really don't know when it's ideal.
I do think it's good to take them with complimentary nutrients. We do vitamin D3 w/vitamin K, magnesium, calcium rich food (so they usually have the other nutrients that support calcium absorption), some fat (likely not necessary), etc. My kids do it before bed as that's when we do calcium rich foods. My husband and I take it whenever but I do take the vitamin K, magnesium, etc. just like my kids.
edited to add: I've not found solid data (nor have I looked hard though) about what does and doesn't fit with vitamin D...we just do it this way because it fits into our day.

That's what I meant by fits in our day here. We do iron, C, basic B vitamins, iodine, and some other stuff particular to us w/breakfast. The D is at night with the calcium/K/Mag and etc.

I put the drops on our food at dinner. Our family doctor told me that the body more readily absorbs Vitamin D at night. This seemed counter-intuitive to me because you obviously get sunshine during the day, but maybe your body creates D from the sunshine hours after exposure, so at night...?
