Cat allergies

Not sure if this is the right forum for this but here goes...

Does anyone know if there is a way to test whether or not someone is allergic to the Fel D1 protein as opposed to general cat dander?

TIA!

You'd probably have to call an allergist and ask. I've only seen them test for cat dander (DH and DD1). There may be some that do. Is it an important distinction?

I think so... because there are cats that have low levels of Fel D1 but still have dander, KWIM? So if it were a dander allergy then a hairless cat would be an option.

I guess I'll try to find an allergist to ask.

Personally, if I were considering a hairless cat, I'd go hang out in a house that just had hairless cats for a while and see if I reacted - I'd trust experience over testing for a decision that might leave me with a pet I reacted to.

Yeah, I know what you mean. We're just taking small steps towards figuring this out anyway. It's not my allergies; it's my husband and my sister.
