new asparagus bed, a little mistake

Help me figure out what to do, please!

I got 10 free asparagus plants recently and today was able to dig the bed. Since I didn't know I was getting them in advance, I didn't prepare the bed weeks ago. I am a complete novice with asparagus.

So today I prepared the bed and planted the asparagus. I followed the directions... mostly. I kind of spaced out and instead of digging the trench, I planted the roots over the bed prepared with composted manure and soil, covered them with 2 inches of soil and composted manure, and then tried to fill in the sides around the roots with soil. There is still a lot of soil to add back in. The directions say to plant the roots in the trench and then cover them up with two inches of soil, and then back fill it as they sprout.

There are still a few inches to fill from where I planted the roots and I am afraid that will somehow mess things up. Will I mess up the plants if I try to add the soil on the sides around the sprouts? Can I or should I leave it alone? What will a sunken bed do to the plants? Should i just fix it now - dig them up and fill in the bed and do the trench etc.? Arghh!

thank you for your wise asparagus advice!

As long as the crowns/roots are underground and not above ground, you should be good. If I'm reading the description correctly.

Yeah, I think it'll be fine.

update

Today I was thrilled to find... the asparagus has sprouted! Some of the sprouts are about 10" tall already. I was totally doing the happy asparagus dance.
