3 mo old arching his back/crying

My 3 mo old is having issues with BFing all of a sudden this week. He will either latch on, start nursing, I will let down and then he will arch his back and cry really hard or right when he starts sucking he will start crying. He will only get a good nursing in if I lay down and nurse him side lying. He has never done this until now. He does have tongue tie and I burp him regularly during feedings and always get good burps. This week his poop has also changed in that he used to poop at least 2x/day and now we are going on our second time of going more than 24 hours with no poop. The last poop was very smelly. I have used mylicon in case it is gas and I just started baby probiotics today. I don't usually eat anything with dairy in it, no eggs, and I am a vegetarian. What else am I missing? help!

Are you drinking soda or coffee? Are you using a nursing pillow? DD started protesting nursing in my lap w/o a pillow and still does. I guess she just isn't comfy

hmm, no soda or coffee but I did away with the nursing pillow at about 4 weeks. He is now 26.5 in long and it was getting to be a lot. It is worth a shot!

any luck? sorry to see you didn't get more suggestions

Maybe your let down is too much for him and it's slower if he's side lying? I wish I had more to offer. Just keep experimenting. Good luck!

It sounds like a strong let down to me, if he's gassy its because of the air he'll take in along with the milk, what are you doing about the tongue tie - that could also be causing the problems although i know that not everyone is keen on clipping. I would like to recommend this website www.biologicalnurturing.com which can help with this sort of thing - it's run by an IBCLC and LLL Leader who is very well known is european cirles - it's worth a go.

Hope you manage to get this sorted out - eventually your milk supply will settle down, you can let down into a towel or a cup if you want to store the milk for future use - and then put baby back on once the let down has stopped - this works quite well for little ones who find the ejection difficult to cope with, be careful of the suck as well, with little ones who have a strong ejection they don't really need to suck too hard to get what they need and want so later on down the line supply issues can appear if the breast isn't being stimulated correctly by the baby - just be aware of this in case there is a drop in your supply or baby's weight, and you'll be able to work on the latch and positioning of baby - my dd had to learn how to nurse at 7 months because until then the milk just poured into her mouth and she had never had to work for it before!!

Thanks for the responses! Right now it is looking like maybe it is a combo of reflux and overactive letdown? My right breast seems to have an overactive letdown- he sputters/chokes sometimes on that side. He is spitting up a lot more the past couple of days as well which has me scrutinizing my diet for anything that could irritate him but I am starting with being super strict about dairy and will work my way through the main culprits if dairy doesn't help enough. I am curious if maybe it is some silent reflux too because he will burp/swallow a lot and just started grimacing with this in the past couple of days.

As far as the tongue tie, I am hesitant to clip it now because he weighs a good amount and I have a good milk supply. I am open to taking care of it if it is something that is needed but it doesn't seem to be yet.

Sigh, so I am trying to do all the things I can. The position change with the nursing pillow unfortunately wasn't it and he does seem to prefer the side lying position for nursing. He actually takes care of the overactive letdown on my right side himself by popping on and off during a feeding. I just have to be extra vigilant to burp him. One thing at a time
